CENTRAL COAST MARINERS JOIN FORCES WITH GHFA
The Gladesville Hornsby Football Association has joined forces with the Central Coast Mariners in a progressive partnership aimed to address three key areas.
As a hot-bed of talented youth, the development of a high performance program under the SPIRIT FC club banner will provide talented athletes with a direct pathway to professional football.
In 2005, pressed into linking with a senior group, Gladesville Spirit United was formed under the guidance of Director of Football Tony Walmsley and has quickly established itself as a force in the NSW State League.
The GHFA already has close ties with Mariners Football Manager, Lawrie McKinna, inaugural Hyundai A-League Coach of the year.
Its a great relationship for the Mariners in building a bigger supporter base plus giving us a closer look at the quality players that have come through Spirit over the years, such as Alex Wilkinson. said McKinna.
I had a great relationship over the years with the GHFA and look to continue to build this over the next few years.
SPIRIT FC will offer scholarships for players under 20 years to play senior football and to train periodically under the eye of McKinna and his staff, coansisting of Head Coach Ian Ferguson, Development Manager Alex Tobin and Academy Coach Stewart Petrie.
GHFA Director of Football, Tony Walmsley believes that the relationship with the Mariners will have a broad impact across the whole community.
We established the Football in the Community Program this year to service coaches and players, said Walmsley.
With the direct support of the Mariners players, plus collateral, we aim to expand into regional centres providing greater access and flexibility for our clubs.
There is already a close affinity with the Mariners from fans in North West Sydney and the partnership will build on this base.
Spirit FC is currently recruiting coaches for its Youth League and State League program and Walmsley indicated a fresh approach to youth development for coaches who want to be part of a dynamic new team.
GHFA President Gordon Buttrey has seen a lot of talent pass through the club and believes this partnership will encourage talented players not only to stay in the region, but to return.
Players leave here at youth level with the belief that it might be better somewhere else. Our position is now clear. We are investing heavily into making our development centre the best in Australia and the Mariners partnership will help us achieve that goal, said Buttrey.
i play in that assocciation, but it's in Sydney. Sydney FC players visited my club. Oh the confusion!
