Hi guys, i am a supporter of Scottish Second Division club Ross County FC. We got relegated from the First division last season (2nd tier, after SPL) and we sacked out manager. We appointed former Dunfermline Atheltic coach Dick Campbell and rumours have it that Stewart Petrie might become his assistant. I know he played a few games for the CCMariners and i thought you might know of his whereabouts/current situation? What's your opinion of him , did he do any coaching with you? Cheers, Hansa Ross County FC Unofficial www.thejailender.com

Its all a bit up in the air from what I've heard he definitely wont be playing for mariners this yr. He hasn't done any formal coaching of the mariners but was supposed to be one of the coaches/organizers of the mariners youth academy.I'm not sure what his situation is with that now tho. It seemed quite sudden and strange when when he was no longer going to be apart of the mariners player/coaching staff .Appeared like Petrie & Lawrie may have had a falling out.

Thanks.
He certainly won't be playing for us at his age now and it would appear he would fit the role of assistant manager with his links to Campbell through DAFC. If he does'nt get another club in Australia he might consider coming home to a full-time position with us.
Only time will tell though, we need promotion again pronto and anyone we can get on board to help is welcome.

Apparently, a Dunfermline fan on www.pieandbovril.com/forum/ says that Petrie stated his desire to return home at a testimonial match in Fife a couple of weeks back. He said the Petrie was being released for 'financial' reasons and he wants to return to Scotland. I notice you have Ian Ferguson too at your club, would have been a good coach for us. Still, i'd be happy with Campbell and Petrie as a possible future head coach.

Not quite true Eggy - no falling out. SP was offered a part time coaching gig with the academy. However, as he did no renew his visa some time before as soon as he lost full time employment (mariners player) he had to leave the country. Hansa, SP will be a valuable addition to your club IMO. He has has heart, passion and understands the game. Was a great asset for the Mariners and still turned it on at 36. He may even be worth a signature as a player.

The rumor I heard was that Lawrie was keen for him to play State League in the off season to maintain fitness and work on his crosses, but Stewart was not, this was then used as an excuse to let him go. The rumor that probably has the most credibility is that it saved us an overseas position and a fair bit of financial space under our salary cap. I hope there was no falling out. I have been a great fan of Stewie's both at Northern Spirit and Mariners. My only disappointment was only seeing him at the end of his playing career. I think he will have a lot to offer you. Keep your eyes off Fergie he is ours. I understand that when he originally came to Spirit his main reason was a desire to live in Australia. I hope he still thinks that way and has a long career with Mariners in front of him.

SP was always a gentleman at club promotions, great with the kids. Will never forget that diving header back across the goal for his second against Perth in 05/06 - finish of a quality striker. I would have been happy to see him stay this year but obviously he expected more $ which was probably not possible with our structure. Would handle 2nd div Scottish league easily even at 37. Isnt Gumprecht the only overseas player on the books?

Good to hear that, it just felt like it when lawrie spoke bout him on prezo night and with him not being there. Petrie could definitely still cut it in Scottish2nd's

We have many strikers on our books at the moment but i would certainly think he could play at our level. HAL is probably equivalent to the SPL or slightly less so but we are playing in a semi-professional league now. (We're still a full-time football club mind you.) I think if DC leads us back to the first division, Petrie could possibly take things from there. If we achieved SPL promotion, he could attract interest from a HAL club and move back to Aus i don't know. I think as a coach we could offer him £40-000+ a year roughly. He will have to adapt to our climate though, we are based in the far north of Scotland, slightly different to what you experience weather wise i'm sure! (Lucky we have indoor training facilities though.

I also thought SP had some family concern (sick mother, or something like that) back in Scotland, hence his non appearance for the final one or two games last HAL season. Maybe, if that family concern still remains, SP may have decided to go back to Scotland and not bothered renewing his visa, once he knew that the Mariners weren't looking at him being in their plans for HALv3 (as a player). If the Academy role was only ever to be part time, he would have had to keep playing for $$, somewhere in Australia. He'd be a handy left midfield at lower levels, and a nifty striker for the odd game too.

Does this mean we have to adopt Ross County as our Favourite Lower Division Scottish team.

So....Petrie IS playing State League now. Presuming if both the Ross County story and the Wolves story are true, Stewart is keeping himself fit enough for when he moves to Ross County? Wolves' season should be finished by about September, 'bout when Ross County's next season is starting? Marinermick's and Pieman's posts made it sound like Petrie had bolted from Australia already.

The scottish season has just finished so nothing will happen for a month/6 weeks. Plus you have to tie up loose ends. So he will be here for a bit.

As he would eb a more non player role at Ross County, I suppose he can be a little late for the start of their season, and get some gametime while he tidies up his Australian affairs.
