I love it when Matty Simon comes on. The crowd are really behind him, within a minute he's normally done something entertaining. He's tall and eager, flinging himself all over the place, so you can see which one he is. Sometimes being keen, unafraid and adrenalin filled is just as good as experience.
Plus he's Kariong's ambassador and he knows it!

. I really rate the guy. His signing is possibly more like 'We need to sign the best Lightning players as a rule' rather than 'Here's a gap in our squad, let's fill it'. But as it turns out, he offers something completely unique to our forward line. He has pace over short and long distances, can finish, has high energy levels, and can challenge in the air. Agree and it time me thinks he could become a great player.

Being one player down for most of tonight's match v the Roar, Lawrie played Matt Simon like a Peter Crouch up front. It almost paid off too. He had some great chances too, like the header late in the first half and the shot late in the second when he was on his back being wrapped up by Reddy.
If he can make more of those chances, then he'll be a legend for sure.

Matty, to me, just needs to watch videos of Viduka. He has the presence in the box he just needs to learn how to stand up and hold off three defenders while he gets a shot in. He played very well tonight.

I must be blind as a bat. Even after watching tonight's game I still don't rate him.
Although nobody really played well, so I guess it rubs off.....
Maybe if he muscled up, got a bit more arrogant, and played like somebody who belongs in the league instead of a kid trying to prove themselves (I'm sure he could step up in terms of skill, but I don't think he's convinced himself he belongs there yet) he may prove dangerous.

Partly agree, but maybe he see's he still need to prove himself and that effects most people. Yes all great players play through it but sometimes you just need a little bit of extra confidence. On tonights game I would rate his game as OK, given he was marked by Craig Moore and still created some half decent chances I think he is worth having a longer look at. I especially liked his lay back in the final seconds.

im convinced that simon should start alongside petrovski now at least in the short term, we do need another striker though but simon is good enough to get the start

It was a shame that Sasho was forced to drop off into midfield yesterday, as he and Matty S together would have been really great. The kid's energy is phenomenal.

The kid's energy is phenomenal. first half there was more energy than elan, as he ran around a lot but didn't really seem to get into great spots. second half he started moving into better spots though, but still needs to pull the trigger from time to time. also, when did we stop crossing the ball? in season one we were very effective from quick low crosses. season two and thus far this season we don't seem to cross the ball that much. i'm not talking about hit and hope moonballs to the far post either, i'm talking about spearing balls picking out a man running to a good spot at either the near or far posts. with his pace and size simon's the sort of guy for whom an early cross to the edge of the 18 would be deadly.

He has potential, but I think he needs a little more upper body stregnth, he's too easily pushed off his line. He also needs to work on his timing.

Didn't really look up to it last night tbh
Energy doesn't make up for skill.

No Jaza, it doesnt. However, he is a bit of a cult hero as he is local, shows 100% committment and you can see how much he wants it.
If Kwas is out for a while and Nik cant tear himself away from nightclubs and feeling sorry for himself he is all we have unless your (oops sorry - our) nice Mr Turnbull whips out the old cheque book.

Going forward as a club I think Matty epitomises what we will be about, absolute local product(all other locals to my knowledge have played outside the area at some stage) great work ethic and improves year after year.Young MacAndrew is another. It is what lawrie and the club have said from day one and I for one love that about the Mariners, sure we will need to get players in that have played at the top but if the core is local well do ok in my opinion.
