VALE BILL CULLINAN
The soccer community is today mourning the passing of well known and respected Competition Secretary, Soccer Wearhouse Manager and friend to all, Mr. Bill Cullinan.
A life member of Soccer NSW, Bill (William) Cullinan’s contribution to the game spanned more than 40 years. A highly respected Director on the Board of the previous NSW Amateur Soccer Federation, Bill held the position of State Competition Secretary for many years until unification in 2003 when he was elected to the position of Soccer NSW Council of Associations Competition Secretary, a position he held until his retirement in December 2005.
Although much of Bill’s life was devoted to the success of competitions in NSW, he will best be remembered by many as the Manager of the Soccer Wearhouse at Valentine Sports Park. Following his own successful career in sports retail, Bill was involved in the establishment and management of the Soccer Wearhouse for more than 12 years until his retirement in 2003 when he and his wife Pam made a move to the Central Coast.
It was Bill’s dedication and commitment to the success of the well-known Champion of Champions competition and other State level association based competitions which earned him much respect. Like many hard working committee members, the role of State Competition Secretary is an honorary one where the only reward for your efforts is seeing people enjoy the game. Bill excelled with the successful running of the Metropolitan League competition, State Cup, Robertson Cup, Amateur Cup, Centenary Cup, Frank Broughton Cup and NSW State Titles for over 40 years.
In 2003 Bill’s outstanding contribution was recognised by Soccer NSW when he was awarded the esteemed George Churchward Medal; the highest contribution to the game of soccer in NSW.
In 2004, he was further recognised by the NSW Sports Federation for his services to sport when he was one of only eight people in NSW granted an Outstanding Services Award at their annual Awards Dinner.
For most in the soccer community, Bill will be remembered fondly as a good friend, a gentleman and a loyal and loving family man with a passion for the game. He will be sadly missed.
We extend our thoughts and condolences to Bill's wife Pamela, his sons Mark and Paul and their wives and his much loved grandchildren.
