Jets coach Gary van Egmond says the depth of both squads will be tested when Newcastle hosts the Wellington Phoenix on Sunday.
The Jets will be without Stuart Musialik, Mark Bridge and Adam D'Apuzzo, who are all on Olyroo duty, while defenders Andrew Durante and Steve Eagleton are also sidelined through injury.
To make matters worse, defender/defensive midfielder Adam Griffiths is now a serious injury doubt for Sunday's game.
"Adam Griffiths looks like he'll succumb to a thigh injury," van Egmond said.
"You're always going to have injuries. That's why you have a squad, and that's why you have to try to ensure the depth of your squad is very good."
The Jets have drafted young locally-based defender Beau Busch and Australian Institute of Sport midfielder James Holland into the squad to cover for injuries this weekend.
There is the chance of more players spending time on the sidelines in future weeks, with a several Newcastle players coming to close to accumulating enough yellow cards to face a suspension.
Van Egmond says his team has to improve its discipline on the field.
"We've spoken about it as a group, we've I think had nine yellow cards in two games," he said.
"Prior to that we were pretty exemplary, we had a decent record."
"Regardless of how good a depth you've got, you're not going to be able to cover everyone."
"It's important players make sure they do the right thing on the pitch. We've got to try and be a lot more disciplined."
Wellington will also be under-strength on Sunday, with five players and coach Ricki Herbert on international duty with New Zealand. Van Egmond believes the game will give fringe players from both squads the chance to stake a claim for more first-team chances.
"They're going to have their depth tested as well," he said.
"I think for both teams it gives players a lot of opportunity to show their wares to the coaches and put their hands up for further games down the season."
