Telstra a chance for GF
FOLLOWING the success of last week's LA Galaxy match, the odds of a Telstra Stadium grand final have shortened dramatically.
Should a blockbuster final eventuate Football Australia, who control the finals series, would consider shifting the match to the 83,000-capacity venue.
Central Coast Mariners are, in principle, supportive of the idea, though the club are keen to stress that is assuming they continue their red-hot run and become the first team to qualify for the grand final.
But a move would require a blockbuster opponent such as Sydney FC, Newcastle or Melbourne Victory.
While Bluetongue Stadium has not been ruled out as a potential grand final venue, the Homebush site or Sydney Football Stadium are more logical choices.
FFA chief commercial officer John O'Sullivan said: "Our view is that we will play the grand final at the venue we deem to be the most appropriate.
"If Central Coast were the first team to qualify for the grand final, we would take a look at our venue hosting options. They would include Central Coast Stadium, and venues such as SFS and Telstra Stadium - both venues are world class and have proven heritage, so not one is favoured over the other."
The club chief executives have been canvassed by FFA about their desired grand final venues should they host it.
The success of the David Beckham game has opened up peoples' eyes to the potential the round-ball code has in this country.
Mariners executive chairman Lyall Gorman warned FFA that any decision would require the unofficial backing of their loyal fan-base, but remained confident a "blockbuster fixture" could work.
"We need to be able to draw more than capacity of SFS, so I would have thought we could hope for at least 50-55,000, similar to what was achieved at Telstra Dome in Melbourne last year," Gorman said.
"You wouldn't want to come there with 30,000, you would like to think we're well past that. Anything less than 50,000 wouldn't be worth it."
Meanwhile the postponed clash between Central Coast and Sydney FC has been rescheduled for Saturday 22 December at Bluetongue Stadium, kick off 7pm, with all original tickets valid.

Telstra stadium is the worst stadium for watching....it's so frikking far away from the field.
Ultimately it'll come down to anticipated numbers - how many tickets could they possibly sell? I'd rather have a small stadium, filled to capacity, then a large stadium, half empty.

I'd rather have a small stadium, filled to capacity, then a large stadium, half empty. for the majority of seats (i.e. those not on the lower bowl behind the goals) it's fine. those behind the goal are in a bad way at the SFS anyway, it's just a bit worse at TS. if they can sell 50,000 tix they won't be holding it at the SFS, even if there are 30,000 empty seats. also, if it can't be in gosford, i'd rather have the match on more neutral territory than the home pitch of our neighbours.

it really should be played at central coast, it gives the club more appeal to the local community, if we earn our place to host a grand final then the fans and players deserve a home game i think... unfortunately the ffa would see the $ signs and opt for Telstra stadium or SFS which would be a shame, especially if it were against Sydney because there goes our home ground advantage.

IF we make it, and IF Sydney do to, it would be unacceptable to hold it at SFS. At home, or mutual ground, otherwise I would urge the club to not except playing at SFS

imo even the Marinators would have trouble striking up an atmosphere in the Olympic Stadium! But that's where it would be, particularly against a 'big' club or Newcastle.

I guess the club has little say in the matter due to it being an FFA event not a CCM event. I guess the best outcome is for us to host a team like Queensland where there is no real need to move away from Bluetongue. But all this talk is pre-mature, our first aim has to be to finish 1st to guarantee Asian Champions League football and then finals series after that

No chance will it be at Bluetongue.
They've said they wouldnt let AUFC have it at Hindmarsh, don't see the extra 3k seats at Bluetongue making a difference.
A CCM home GF would be at Telstra Stadium.

If its against QLD, it will be at Bluetongue. I cant see a GF at Telstra between CCM and QLD getting more than 20,000 so what the point of moving it

It should not matter who we play. If we are hosting it should be at Bluetongue. That's the whole point. The team to host has home ground advantage. I wil be very angry if that right is taken away from us

How stupid having it at telstra stadium. If the grandfinal is say Mariners vs QLD they will be lucky to get 30000 people there. Compare this with previous grandfinal at a packed out SFS and Telstra Dome.
Even if the grandfinal was an F3 derby well youve got too look at how many fans will actually go down there.
Newcastle's highest ever crowd 24000 Central Coast highest ever crowd 17000
Say that both teams could get those respective amounts to travel well the 80000 capacity Telstra Stadium would still be half empty. And that is not a good look for the showcase event of domestic Australian football.

FFA run the finals, not the clubs.
IF we win the right to host the GF it will be at SFS, unless if we play Sydney and I think the Mariners will demand Aussie so not to give Sydney home advantage.
The Mariners would push the FFA to arrange buses etc.......if we play an interstate team travel is easier.........I think even if Newcastle won the right they would be lucky to host it at EAS.
IMO Telstra will only work if it's Mariners or Newcastle v Sydney.......we could have taken more than the 7k we did in V1, and I'm sure Sydney would bring more also.
I'd love to see it in Gosford but I'd be 99% sure it never would be.

Personally, I think the grand final will be played at Telstra Staium if any of the three NSW clubs get a "home" grand final. Simply for the reason that it's a grand final. A lot of people will go to a grand final even if the term they support didn't make it, Natalie and I went to last years GF in Melbourne and we certainly weren't the only neutrals in the 60k+ crowd.
