What terrible news. Hopefully he can live a full life after this shocking accident.....
""Uruguay striker Dario Silva, who played against Australia in the World Cup qualifier at home last year, has had his lower right leg amputated following a car crash.
Silva suffered an exposed fracture of the leg after the accident on Montevideo's main seafront avenue on Sunday, when his pick-up truck collided with a lamppost.
"The doctor has spoken to us and told us that they had to amputate the leg because it was a threat to his life," his mother Doris Pereira said in a radio interview on Monday.
Silva is in an induced coma in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Montevideo.
He played for English Premier League side Portsmouth last year and was out of contract.
The 33-year-old striker began his career with local side Defensor Sporting and then joined more fashionable Penarol.
He moved to Europe in 1995 to play for Italy's Cagliari and has since played for Espanyol, Malaga and Sevilla in Spain as well as Portsmouth.
Silva made 49 appearances for Uruguay between 1995 and 2005, scoring 14 goals, and played at the 2002 World Cup when Uruguay were knocked out in the first round.
His last international appearance was in the match against Australia last year.""

Former Uruguay striker Dario Silva is hoping he can return to football using a prosthetic limb after having part of his right leg amputated following a car crash.
The former Malaga and Portsmouth forward had the lower part of his leg amputated after his pick-up truck crashed in Montevideo last month.
But he is remaining upbeat and has refused to ruled out the possibility of playing again at some level.
He told the La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper: "In a couple of months you will see me walking alongside my friends, riding a horse and, maybe, returning to a football pitch. If the new leg works well, I won't be afraid of trying."
"It was not easy to accept the fact of having lost one leg. It is the instrument I work with. It is like if you cut a tennis player's arm off."
"But I understand that doctors did what they had to because my life was at risk."
Silva also admitted he has been overwhelmed by the amount of support he has received from around the world since the accident in Uruguay last month.
"I still have to reply to 780 messages. I could have expected solidarity in Italy, Spain and England, where I played, but I have never imagined that a team from Shanghai could have dedicated me a poster to back me. Life is a wonderful gift, even with only one leg," he added.
Good to see ;D
