Ahhhhhhhhhh, 3rd round day. My favourite day of the footballing calendar barring the FA Cup Final - the one chance every year that the small fries of English football have their shot at the big time, and this year is no different.
Bristol Rovers v Hereford
Stoke City v Millwall
Barnet v Colchester
Birmingham v Newcastle
Blackpool v Aldershot
Bristol City v Coventry
C.Palace v Swindon
Cardiff City v Tottenham
Chelsea v Macclesfield
Chester v Ipswich
Derby v Wrexham
Doncaster v Bolton
Everton v Blackburn
Hull City v Middlesbro'
Leicester v Fulham
Liverpool v Arsenal
Nottm Forest v Charlton
Peterborough v Plymouth
Portsmouth v Wigan Athletic
Preston NE v Sunderland
QPR v Luton Town
Reading v Burnley
Sheff Utd v Swansea City
Southend v Barnsley
Stoke City v Millwall
Tamworth v Norwich
Torquay v Southampton
Watford v Stockport
West Brom v Leeds Utd
West Ham v Brighton
Wolves v Oldham
Everton v Blackburn
Man Utd v Aston Villa
Sheff Weds v Man City
Some cracking fixtures in there, but the few that stand out most for me are:
Cardiff City v Tottenham - Cardiff were doing great in the first half of the Championship season, and even though they've fallen away a little bit, this is an away trip that Tottenham won't want to take lightly. And neither should the travelling Spurs fans.
Chelsea v Macclesfield - oh my how I would _love_ for Macclesfield to pull off the traditional "third round shock upset" here. At the same time, they could get pummelled 8 - 0. I'm sincerely hoping it's the former
Tamworth v Norwich - no idea how either of these teams go about their football, but as a young lad I used to live in Tamworth (New South Wales, obviously) so I guess it's a bit of novelty value seeing a team from the original Tamworth running around. A quick check of their website reveals their nickname to be the "Lambs". Not exactly fear inspiring - and they are nearly bottom of the Conference. But hey, this is what 3rd round day is all about
Liverpool v Arsenal - I don't know what it is, but when any of the Big Four play each other in FA Cup it takes on a whole other level. It will also be very interesting to watch the corresponding Carling Cup fixture next week at the same ground to note just how different the two competitions are. FA Cup >>>>>>> League Cup.
Nottingham Forest v Charlton - Former European champions now battling away in League One, versus one of the near certainties to join them in the Championship (should Forest get promoted) next season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Forest pull off a victory here.
Come 1am Saturday night/Sunday morning, I'll be settling down infront of my ESPN and not moving for a good while. Man oh man I love 3rd round day. ;D ;D ;D
