England to fight Australia to host 2018 World Cup February 13, 2007 - 1:48PM
England fired its first major shot today in what looms as a long battle with Australia to host the 2018 soccer World Cup.
The UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer (treasurer) and Prime Minister-in-waiting Gordon Brown launched a feasibility report that is expected to give the green light to a formal bid by the Football Association.
England's preparations are based on the premise that the World Cup will return to Europe in 2018 after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2014 World Cup in South America, most likely Brazil.
However FIFA may opt to continue a genuine rotation policy that would see the 2018 event staged in Asia, with Australia - now it has joined the Asian confederation - a prime candidate and one that would have appeal to those seeking to spread the gospel of the game beyond its European heartland.
Canada is thought to be another contender for the same reasons, with North America hosting the World Cup only once, in the USA in 1994.
Brown said England's attempt to host the World Cup just six years after the 2012 Olympics was possible.
"I just see this as one of the great sporting decades in this country's history," Mr Brown said.
"It reinforces the image of England around the world, but also the sense that we are taking ourselves seriously as a sporting nation.
"Other countries will see England as the obvious place."
The final vote on who hosts 2018 will happen in 2012.

With Platini as head of UEFA I reckon England will struggle. Platini is a Blatter man while the English FA was aligned with Johannson - the man ousted by Michele.
Australian soccer is aligned with Blatter. As is the extremely powerful Bin Hannanan (sic) who is a multi-billionaire, basically the biggest power broker in Asia, VP of the Asian Conferedation, and the man who funds all of Blatter's bribes.
It's a dirty, political world.
If anyone wants a good read on all of this get "Foul" by Andrew Jennings. It is quite eye opening and the history of Blatter goes back to Dassler and Adidas.
Blatter is an evil, corrupt SOB with no morals whatsoever.

As much as England is the home of football (IMO ) I would love to see the World Cup in Australia. Not only because I live here but I think it's about time the Aussies staged a massive event like this and they have proved with the Olympics and Rugby World Cup that they are more than capable. Australia has some of the best stadiums in the world, it would be a perfect venue! Bring the World Cup to Oceania! It's been to America, Europe, Asia and soon Africa, only 1 more continent left! In saying that the new Wembley deserves to host a World Cup final - it looks awesome!

I think I heard a while ago that Oceania would select Australia as a representative, even though we are clearly an Asian nation. So if the rotation policy was used and Oceania's turn came around Australia would be the only nation nominated. I still think we could beat out a Sol. Island bid anyway.

Either way it's about time it came to this part of the world.

Australia could represent Oceania in a general "spread football all over the World" type of sense, even though we are officially now in another confederation. With it being Asia's turn also, we have to be in with a good shout. After potentially sketchy hosts in SA and Brazil next up, FIFA may want a very reliable big event hoster, which we certainly are. It's only a matter of time.
