Got a new DVD movie out today called 'Sixty Six'. A nostalgic look at life circa the 1966 World Cup.
While probably best appreciated by old ex-Pommie farts like Kevrenor, Donny Parkes and myself, it is mostly a 'boy growing up and coming of age in London' movie with a dash of football.
Being a 10 year old in London in '66 it certainly struck a cord with me and brought back a lot of memories. The movie was liberally scattered with little historical touches that had me going 'Yes! I remember that now!'
While it had a lot of Jewish references that had me bemused (as the family presented was of that religion\race) the characters were all funny in their way, in a black comedy sense. Talk about mal-adjusted!
The interspersed snippets of football footage of the England games was well done, especially the full colour final footage. The final looked brilliant on a HD TV.
While the movie took some time to get going early on, as it focussed on setting the scene for the family, it picked up speed after 'half time'.
Curiously, the excitement of England making the final was quite restrained in the movie (but that was as was it was back then). Not at all like that night of Nov 16 2005 or the subsequent celebrations during and after the Japan and Croatia WC06 matches.
This movie was a bit 'Billy Elliot meets Fever Pitch', and was made by the makers for Bridget Jones and About A Boy.
Well worth a few bucks to watch.

I beg your pardon ... wash your mouth out with soap! Born in the football district of Gladesville Hornsby. Sounds like another for the gift list.

I was never good at geography. I hope Donny is the genuine article, or I've scored two own goals.
