Sevilla wing-back Antonio Puerta has died. The 22-year-old Spain international collapsed on the field after suffering a cardiac arrest during his side's Primera Liga game against Getafe.
Puerta was able to walk off but suffered a relapse in the dressing room and required cardiac resuscitation.
He was rushed to the Hospital Virgen del Rocio in Seville but died.
"We regret to report that the patient Antonio Puerta died at 1430 (2130 AEST) today (Tuesday). The death was caused by postanoxic encephalopathy and a multiple failure of his organs caused by the prolonged cardiac arrest that provoked his admission to hospital," the hospital said in a statement.
UEFA have postponed the UEFA Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Juande Ramos' side.
The Sevilla squad is currently flying back to Spain from Greece.
Puerta, whose girlfriend is pregnant, had been a member of the Sevilla first team for three seasons and spent 14 years in total with the club he joined as a boy.

Yea, that's pretty sad, just shows these sorts of things can happen to anyone! Heart Attacks are very scary and keeping track of your heart is so important.
I wonder how many heart conditions for professional athletes are just ignored because they're elite athletes.

Players are dropping like flys at the moment... Clive Clarke's agent revealed "paramedics had to use a defibrillator" after the Leicester defender collapsed at half-time in the Carling Cup tie at Nottingham Forest. The second-round clash was abandoned at the break after the 27-year-old had lost consciousness in the dressing room. Clarke, who joined the Foxes on loan from Sunderland earlier this month, received treatment from paramedics at the City Ground but regained consciousness and was taken to hospital in Nottingham. Agent Gary Mellor told BBC Radio Stoke: "Clive is sitting up and talking and he is going to have more tests at the hospital on Wednesday afternoon." "They won't give us any idea as to when he will be released. They don't want to tell us any more until they know exactly what happened." "It appears Clive's heart stopped twice and mouth-to-mouth didn't work so the paramedics had to use a defibrillator." "His family are very upset, especially after what happened with the Sevilla player Antonio Puerta dying recently. We just hope he's going to be okay." Leicester manager Martin Allen paid tribute to the club's medical staff. He told the club's official website, www.lcfc.co.uk, said: "I must say [head physio] Dave Rennie and [sports scientist] Damien Doyle were absolutely outstanding in coping and dealing with what was a traumatic and difficult situation." "We are lucky both members of staff were on hand at such a difficult and testing time." Foxes chief executive Tim Davies said his "thoughts and prayers" were with Clarke and his family. Davies, who described Clarke as "very seriously ill", said no one at the club was aware of the player suffering from any medical condition. He said: "When Clive went into the dressing room he collapsed and was very seriously ill. This is the first time we are aware of anything happening to Clive. He was taken away in an ambulance to hospital. He did offer a few words in the ambulance." "Our thoughts and prayers are with Clive and his family, we hope he makes a speedy recovery."

And another one, just posted at The World Game...
Zambian striker Chaswe Nsofwa of Israeli second division side Hapoel Beer Sheva has collapsed and died during a practice match in the southern desert city, ambulance staff said.
Nsofwa, 27, was pronounced dead at Beer Sheva's Soroka Hospital after resuscitation efforts on the pitch failed to revive him, the Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service said.
"We found the player lying on the ground unconscious as his friends tried to help him. He was in a state of clinical death," ambulance worker Carmel Cohen told Israel Radio.
Cohen added that despite efforts which lasted 40 minutes, the player was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Nsofwa, who was part of Zambia's African Cup of Nations squad in 2002, scored two goals for Hapoel in their 3-0 win over Hakoah Amidar/Ramat Gan at the weekend.
He is the second young footballer to die this week and the third to collapse while playing or training.
Spanish international wing-back Antonio Puerta of Sevilla collapsed during the opening league match of the Spanish season against Getafe and died following complications as a result of a heart attack.
On the same day that Puerta died, Leicester City defender Clive Clarke collapsed during the half-time break of his side's Carling Cup match against Nottingham Forest and was rushed to hospital.
The match was abandoned but the latest diagnosis on the Irish international was that he should make a full recovery.
