[grump attack]out of the last 20 posts-
7 for the user above you game 3 girlie chat 2 msn marinators 1 word association game
more than half has not much relevance to all but a handful of people. the recent posts page is a really easy way to catch up on what's new on the forum, but when it's full of teen fluff then it's pointless.
if only one other person is going to care, PM them or use msn.[/grump attack]

i totally understand about the social chat on all the other threads.but for the threads in other stuff, isnt it for other stuff?for us to have fun and not talk extremely formal and only about football. The Mariners were a family orientated club, thats the impression i got,i thought that other stuff was a place people could go to have fun and meet all the marinators.but obviously from reading the stuff on here you guys want it kept to FOOTBALL FOOTBALL FOOTBALL.which is understandable.please at least tell us which thread we ARE alowed to be social on,cos i just don't know anymore..

the main problem some people aren't seeing is the 'Most recent posts' page.
explanation for those who dont know:
on the front page of the forum there is a link down the bottom that says 'view the 20 most recent posts on the forum'. it takes you to a page that contains....the 20 most recent posts on the forum! it used to be 50, then 40, then 30, and now it's 20.
It's a great way to check out the latest discussions for anything that interests you, related to football or not, without having to go in and out of every thread.
But these days it's rendered useless because, as dibo pointed out, the majority of posts are pointless to most users, and there's no way to exclude them from this convenient search.
I just thought I'd point this out for those who say 'if you dont want to read the stuff we talk about, just ignore it'. people who want to use the 'view recent posts' (and who's to say they shouldn't) method of reading the forum ARE inconvenienced, whether you like it or not.
the end of fact ---------------------------------------------------------------- the start of my opinion
As for my personal thoughts, I personally agree with Golden Boy about the essence of a forum. It should be the sharing of ideas and opinions in a public arena. Other stuff should fall under the same forum umbrella, but just be of different topics. What do fellow Mariners fans think of this music, that movie, or the other sport. If it had to be defined by a rule, if an outsider cant read your post and the 5 before it, and know exactly what you're talking about, it's not 'forum'. That would be a lovely ideal to aspire to.
But it's not going to be that way and it's much more relaxed around here. If you make an irrelevant but funny post in a very serious discussion thread, I say good on you. If you hijack a thread with discussion someone new to the forum couldn't instantly comprehend, leave it off. If you are constantly having discussions, in mariners, in other stuff, wherever, that isn't for the benefit of everyone reading, cant it go elsewhere? It's a big internet.
If it harmed no one, I'd happily ignore it. But as it congests the area I described in the fact section of this post, it IS hindering the forum usage of some people who, dare I say it, are trying to use the forum for a purpose closer to what it was designed for.
NOTE: If some of the 'younger' users seem to think this whole ordeal is based on us 'older' (how did I end up with the oldies? sad childhood?) people being the fun police, i guess you have every right to think that. you come from a generation where entire friendships and romances can be run and finished over the net. That's a whole other discussion. But the problem isn't being SILLY instead of FORMAL, you can either of those anywhere you want, its about being RELEVANT.

Yes Brett those facts are correct so i relised....... I'm probably a bad offender in using and posting in the other threads section, This is because. I mostly read all the threads and agree or disagree but i could never post good stuff in the football threads because i don't seem to be able to write as well as alot of people on here plus i get inpatient in writing post that take forever ( I forget what I'm trying to say). This is why i decided to go back and look up my last 50 posts and most of them are in the other stuff bit. Sorry guys i will not post shit anymore and i will try my best to post smart stuff in the other threads

Can I make a suggestion that if its possible, when clicking on the "Most Recent Posts" link, that any threads in "Other Stuff" doesn't come up (someone comp. technical can advise if that is an option).
It seems to me the main problem people are having is Other Stuff threads coming up in the most recent posts. If you can eliminate that part of the problem I think it would satisfy most people.
If you do post in other stuff i.e user above you, you can go the "long" way and click on Other Stuff, then find the thread you are after. Alternatively, you can click on your profile, change your settings to see your last 10, 15, 20 etc posts and find it that way.
I think it would also help if when going into the different sections whether it be other stuff or the marinators, that these threads are sorted by last post, therefore finding current threads would be eaiser.
I realise I'm probably still classified as a "newbie", but to me it seems like a logical solution.

im with you teriyaki...if it can be done that way great but......
im also in the same boat as melsy and it seams that we are coming under fire from bigger ships.i do post in the football threads as well, but at the moment there isnt really much happening. i post in mariners fc first ,then marinators, then other stuff. then i look in the overseas etc threads......i do post in different threads than "other stuff" is the point im getting at.
i just think teriyaki's idea is great...that is if it can be done... hey isnt this convo in "other stuff"? my winge over.....

hey isnt this convo in other stuff it's a good point. nothing is taboo. this is why rules cant be made. if rules were to be made, lines would have to be drawn. and we have all talked rubbish on here, so when does it become excessive? thats something that cant be answered. so i dont think anyone is saying to not post in a certain type of thread. just be considerate to others who are here specifically for football, because that is what the forum is primarily for, and think about continuing certain chats elsewhere if possible.

Sorry, nice idea, but can't be done. We use a bog standard free forum, and all as far as I can see the others also don't allow that. Maybe one day when we get really, really good at all this we will build out own forum but that is some serious computing. The only option I've got for you is to start a group within the forum and only allow those in the group to see the threads. I haven't worked out if that would stop you seeing the rest though! Alas that idea also starts making this a them and us thing, which we really don't want to do. I've tried hard not to isolate the Marinators stuff from the other couple hundred of non-marinators, for example, as we are all fans together. I think the main test is - would I talk like this in a chat room or MSN! If so, it probably doesn't belong in a forum with 850+ users! BTW - really enjoying the jokes in the Girls thread! BTW 2 - Melsy, you're fine!
