the number of times i've been caught on the back (or sides, or most annoyingly, under the shinpad on the shinbone when the shinpad gets belted aside) of the leg by studs is enormous - breaking skin often enough, sunday i got studs down the side of my ankle... i wouldn't say i've ever really had a bleeder though, so i reckon bretto's probably got my points decision there...
but i don't know anything about playing football ;D

they shave their legs for when they tape their ankles knees etc it hurts so bad trying to rip that stuff off when you have hairy legs.

The only reason I can see is for taping, I have experience with all 3 reasons issued and taping is the only one I've ever felt a need to shave for.

cyclists shave their whole legs for wounds that can get infected rubdowns as well - when the pro cyclists in le tour or whatever are riding 150km+ per day for three weeks, they spend almost as much time on the rubdown table as on the bike. even waxing would be less painful than tha much massaging of hairy legs! crashes aren't that common - the average rider might have a fall every 2 weeks or so if that, but infection control is a big issue because you can ride with a wound, but infections are both uncomfortable and bad for your general conditioning because of the extra immune system load. interestingly (and supportive of the rubdown hypothesis), cyclists don't tend to shave their arms, yet the forearm near the elbow gets skinned as often as legs do.

That answer is certainly comprehensive and well supported by argument. Now, why do women shave their legs?

i can't quite describe it, but taking tape off the sole of your feet is bizarrely painful, especially if your feet have been cooped up in boots for two hours on a hot day... and shaved ankles are definitely cool!

I only shaved my knee when I had ITB, I always had a bit of tape over it anyway so no-one would notice that.
I've never had any pain taking tape off the soles of my feet. The bad part is when you think the tape has worked and you've avoided blisters you get in the shower and discover that you were wrong!
I question why runners do it, it can't be that detrimental to your time!
