Triple M newsreader Sasha Higlett has just announced that the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has reportedly been pronounced dead in Port Douglas, QLD.
He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when he encountered a Sting Ray. The Ray apparently attacked him, piercing his lung.
Attempts were made to revive him, but was apparently pronounced DOA at Hospital.
Reports are sketchy right now, but this is NOT a joke.
RIP Steve. What terrible news.

It's on the SMH online as well. I thought it may be a carve up, Teriyaki, but this has actually happened. The environment has lost a very dedicated advocate, and we have lost a pretty decent and passionate Australian.
Condolences to his wife, young kids and extended family.

i got a lump in my throat, he wasnt just an ambassador for australia, but nature in a whole. he was one of my heros and a generally nice guy, the most upsetting thing is that i will never be able to meet him, which is one of the things i most wanted to do.

From what I've seen on the TEN news, he was swimming above the Ray and it raised it's barbs and struck him in the heart. Ouch! was what I first thought. Then sorrow that someone who had such a great enthusiasm for the nature in our world is no longer with us. Very saddened that he's left behind a young family. He was a man who lived with the wild animal kingdom and did better than most, to communicate to the rest of us, the beauty and diversity of the animals in our world. He obviously knew the risks involved when he ventured into their world, but was never afraid to get up close and personal with these animals so we could appreciate them better from the safety of our lounge room. His accent and on screen enthusiasm did make him unique, but you couldn't help but get drawn into the story he was telling. The story he did on the biggest motherf*** of dragons in Indonesia had me speechless. These things eat goats in one gulp, and here he was crawling in for a close up shot! May he Rest in Peace.

It is a damn shame, his conservation work will be sorely missed. just hoping that his zoo is viable enought to stay open without the income of his tv shows. at least he loved what he did for work and in that died doing what he loved.
stingrays like any animal will attack when provoked, with Steve Irwin this was always a possibility. also heard that he might of been stung by a type of poisinous jellyfish.
