en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Federer During this year's Australian Open alot of people have been asking the question, whether or not Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all-time. The above link is Roger Federer's Wikipedia profile, which contains a long list of his records and achievements. I want to know everybody's view on this. I'll start of by saying that at the moment Roger Federer isn't the greatest player of all time. I don't think he could receive this title merely because of the fact that he is yet to win every grand slam title, or in-fact complete, "The Grand Slam".

He will be one day but not yet. Plenty of time for him to achieve that title.

If he stays fit and focused he will break Sampras record but until then he is just a great, not the greatest.

The greatest player of all time is Rod Laver, having won 2 full grand slams.
Who is next is very topical. Sampras, 14 slams, but NEVER on clay at Roland Garros. Emerson, 12 slams, Borg (who was unbelievable on clay and at the All-England champs but couldn't handle Flushing Meadows and never won at Kooyong) won 11, but I would throw in Andre Agassi into the mix, as he won 8 but won ALL FOUR Slams.
This bloke Roger Federer is quite magnificent. He really is just extraordinary. If he wins in Paris (I think he will find a way to beat Rafa and Gonzalez), then he will be No.2.
If he wins a full Slam, equal with Laver.
If he wins a full Slam AND an Olympic Gold Medal (he has set himself on the Gold Medal to be played at Wimbledon on 2012), he'll be No.1.
Of the current crop of players, on all surfaces, there is only one bloke who can go with him on any given day; Marat Safin. But it has to be good Marat, not bad Marat. Safin can seriously play, mark my words. We haven't seen the best of him yet.
Nadal will have to learn to play Roger on DecoTurf and Rebound Ace; he'll never get Roger on grass.
Some Junior we haven't heard of yet (last name ending in -ov) will be the next big thing. Roger will reign supreme until the London Olympics, barring injury or going positively potty and falling for one of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton or, gasp, that weapon of mass destruction, Anna Nicole Smith!!!!

I think he will be one day, but he needs to do a grand slam, as Auburn said, and if he wins in Roland Garros he'll probably go on and win the slam.
Breaking the record for most weeks at number one has to put him up there.

At the moment, I regard him as one of the greats, but not the greatest ever, and time will tell as to whether he acheives enough to be regarded as the all time number 1. He definitely has the ability and the drive to reach those heights, but will need to win the French Open a couple of times before he can be called the greatest.
With regards to Rod Laver, there was a substantial period of time in which he was ineligible to play in Grand Slam tournaments and Davis Cup competition when he was professional and those competitions were only open to amateur players.
With regards to Bjorn Borg, how many times did he actually take part in the Australian Open and the US Open? I have been led to believe that he didn't play much outside of Europe.

It is also hard to compare players of different eras because you have to factor in their opposition. How do Roddick, Safin, Nadal etc comapare to Sampras's opponents Agassi, Becker, Rafter and then also Laver's opponents? Maybe i am a touch pedantic.

Missing,
You've changed Walking Wombat's title!!
Borg hardly played at Kooyong, but at that time not many of the top players did, as it was a second rate tournament played STRAIGHT after Christmas Day, with no lead-in tournaments. Kooyong was the reason Flinders (since renamed Melbourne) Park Tennis Centre was built, in order to make the Australian Open fair dinkum. It is now.
Borg most certainly played at Flushing Meadows, but could not handle:
*the DecoTurf (which is surprising, because it is slow), *the American crowds, *New York in general, a far different place then than it is now (it was a truly scary place before Rudolph Guiliani and 9/11) *the fact that the US Tennis Centre sits RIGHT UNDER JFK & LaGuardia Airports' flightpaths and *three left-handers named Jimmy Connors, Roscoe Tanner and one J.P.McEnroe, Esq.
Truth be told, Borg couldn't get on the first plane home quick enough from New York.
Cheerio,
AM

David, you so have to go on that "Rich List" program on seven Oh god that show is painful. Can someone please tell me why they have to have a colour changing sound proof booth? It serves no purpose. He talks to one team then tells the other team exactly what the first team said. What's the point? Is it because Andrew O'Keefe likes pressing those buttons?
