Schoolie vodka binge sickens teenager
Thursday Nov 22 14:37 AEDT
A 17-year-old school leaver ended up in hospital after using a funnel to pour half a litre of vodka down her throat, as friends urged her on, police said.
The teenager was discharged after treatment for what West Australian police said was life-threatening behaviour.
The teenage girl was drinking spirits with a group of friends, all about the same age, at a private house in the seaside holiday town of Dunsborough, about 250km south of Perth, on Wednesday evening.
Dunsborough police Sergeant Ian Clarke said the girl had used a funnel to gulp down about 500ml of vodka as her friends urged her on.
"Doing stuff like that is just crazy, it's fraught with danger and it's potentially life threatening," Sgt Clarke said.
"It's just like basically pouring poison down your neck."
The teenager was taken to nearby Busselton hospital's emergency department, where she received treatment before being discharged into her parents' care late Wednesday night.
A Health Department spokeswoman said the girl was released in a stable condition.
It is not known whether she had her stomach pumped.
There was little police could do when people were drinking in a private home, Sgt Clarke said.
But he urged school leavers to have a responsible adult with them when they partied.
"These young people, in a lot of cases, have got little or no experience with alcohol and they're going out and absolutely cutting sick with no idea of what they're doing," he said.
"They're putting themselves at risk."
