Donning flame retardent clothing...... The F & the C word have become more commonly used in today's society and unfortunately I would believe those saying what you hear around Bay 16 isn't even as bad as around a high school. Is this a good thing? We're free to have our opinions on it but as someone who uses the F word reasonbly often but not often enough for it to lose it's effect (unless on the football pitch) and who exceedingly rarely uses the C word, I don't think so. Always thought that excessive use of these words reflects short comings in the users vocabulary and over use just ends up lessening their impact anyway. Over the years of attending football here and overseas and particularly following Spirit, my preferences for chanting and singing from the terraces is for original and witty lyrics which wind up opposition players/supporters/administrators/owners and of course the referee as well, rather than relying too heavily on the F & C words. I mentioned this to Marinermick during our e-post mortem yesterday when asked how the Marinators form had been. I think there's great passion and a lot of promise in the support we have in bay 16 but I'd love to hear a bit more inventiveness and less reliance on the stronger swear words in chants/songs. As I've said, as someone who uses these words of course I'm not totally against them (but prefer to be mindful who I say them around - and yes Mick I do remember our match v. Woy Woy this season) and I expect to hear them in an area of vocal supporters. I just think we can do better. Re. kids and these words, I was in Bay 16 for all three matches but took along my 11yo step son to sundays match of course knowing full well some of the words he'd hear. A little hesitant about it but he knows what we expect of him and ourselves and just hearing people chant and sing these words doesn't mean that he is going to think that we think it's acceptable. Of course it's just another place in society where they are going to hear these sorts of things but it doesn't mean they're going to necessarily make it their standard because of it. There is enough space in Grahame Park to take the kids and sit from where the profanities would be a little more muted. So I guess that puts me somewhere in the middle in the spectrum of this debate! Great topic Radioman! Good point too: whether you swear/don't swear/swear a little/swear a little more can't be taken as an indicator of religious persuasion. Hey football creates 1001 arguments - we don't need religion/politics/sex to get in the way!

In my honest opinion, it is extremely unlikely that hearing a swear word a cuppla times during the 90 mins will turn any measurable number of people away from bringing their kids back. If it did bother any parent too much, they'd probably just make sure they sat further away the next time they came. It is not exclusive. People can move.
I honestly don't think it is worth worrying about, and the actual incidences of swearing seem pretty few and far between in any case.
The comparison between SU/Bonnyrigg reports turning people away and the potential for swearing to potentially do the same is drawing an extremely long bow. This was (ongoing) ethnically related violence which was widely reported in the media, and smeared the game. There is a world of difference between that and the potential for swearing to do the same. Can't see it making the front page of the Tele.
I'm all for the Marinators adding to the experience for kids ...and that's exactly what we do as far as I can see!
In fact, the Marinators, the occasional swear word and all, continuing to do exactly what they are doing now, would do more to attract people of all ages than they would detract.
And if any parent thinks they could take their kid to a Rugby League match without hearing an expletive I'd say they are deluding themselves. Or the cricket. Or school.
Of course I can see the point being made and admit it MAY turn SOME people off, but it would be negigible IMHO and there is no need to over-sanitise this league.

Shame no one gets to see marinators and bling bling fans, shaking each others hands after the match and enjoying a drink together isn't it. eh eh eh..hang on..I did that, and I found them humble in their (flukey victory). They were more than surprised to be playing us (of all teams). On this religious bent, all I can say is whilst Jesus may save, Buddha...pays dividends.

Good to see an active forum discussion, shame it's about this crap!
If you don't like swearing, don't sit near Bay 16. This area is for adults - or should be!
I don't like chants about people's sexuality. However, I love the atmosphere so I choose to stay in (or near) Bay 16.
Use your freedom. Sit where you are comfortable.

As a secular humanist www.religioustolerance.org/humanism.htm, I'm offended by all this Christian talk. ;D ;D ;D As Douglas Adams said; "Who is this God person anyway?" If the F & C words are used with some wit and in a non-violent manner I have no problem with it, and it won't prevent me bringing kids to Bay 16. As others have said - it's a big stadium, so if you don't like it, go sit somewhere else. I remember at previous NSL matches, there was always a number of spectators (usually elderly ) who used to get rather irate at anyone making the slightest noise, or waving a flag, let alone swearing. They were content eating their Sao's, sipping their tea, and just watching. Well bully for them. We had a name for them 'cardboard people'. Did they attract other supporters to the game? Did they add to the electric atmosphere? Do we need to pander to that too? Hardly! If you want to watch football in a morgue, go visit Newcastle United's Enema Stadium. As for the claim that we may be mistaken for Rugby League fans. Hardly likely, as most would be supporting Newcastle Jets. We also have necks, and can string a sentence (well most of us can anyway!) Go you Marinators!

Interesting issues on this debate. But I am concerned how religion raised its head Has not religion, politics and a failure to accomidate others caused wars in europe and thus unfortunatly football in this country. Personally I believe that the Marinators are whitty enough to sing songs that slag the opposition without just calling jo bloggs is a wanker , C#%T, or FUC$W#@t. I understand that swearing is generally accepted buy the community these days but we will attract more supporters by being funny rather that just crude. My vote for what it counts is swearing in moderation and in context is benificial over swearing for swearing sake.

Sorry dnm, but it really ISN'T called soccer in this country anymore!!! We now follow the rest of the world as it is - "the world game". Quite frankly i hate the word (soccer) and take just as much offence to that word, as the ones u will hear in our beloved Bay 16 (No offence at all!) I dont think that a few words coming out of a few peoples mouths are goin to stop people coming to the Mariners game's. In fact i think u will find the "marinators", (agreeing with what many people have been saying) will attract more fans, as they know that they will be attending a high quality football match filled with passionnate and excited fans, giving full support to OUR football team. After all, that is what being a fan is all about!

Still think some are missing the simple point - and it was not a dogmatic point..... just to be mindful of how much swearing happens... I work in an environment were we do not swear... not hard, we still have laughs, still jokes etc... Dh, DH etc does have a cachy ring, I found myself thinking it on the way home, but I have also been caught singing "I'm just a sweet transvestite" - not good at all! Telling supporters to sit over there, or stay at home etc is not helpful - we want as much crowd in Bay 16 as possible. All I was really suggesting was compromise or no excessive swearing. I agree with the statement about witty humour as a better idea. Again, I meant no offense, o ban on swearing, not sure why some get angry? saying we must have it.. must is not true.. We must have the Marinators though, and if that be part of the Marinators then so be it, but there is no doubt at all that some will stay away if extremely offensive language is too constant - well, excessive. I would like to join in some songs, but I wouldn't be joining with the swearing songs - especially if I was with my kids - my eldest being 21yrs - she would be offended and think of me as a DH if I did! Ta.. Get out there and make more Marinators!

Thats cool and no offence to anyone but this conversation is getting rather repetitive and boring!
Lets all agree that swearing will not stop in Bay 16, it may tone down but I doubt it, sorry for those people who are offended however most people feel it's not a major issue. We all know 90% of people swear every now and again in general, and you hear a hell of a lot worse in other places apart from Central Coast Stadium.

When i went to school, masturbation was also called wanking, those boys that engaged in wanking, were called wankers. Now the name wanker is usually kept for people we dislike or for someone who does something that we dont like i.e. a referree or an opposition fan, or a driver on the F3 in peak hour. Now i dont believe for one minute that any of my sons are wankers. And i will have none of it in bay 16 thank you very much. Good nights Boys
