Can anyone please explain why the standard of refs is so low?? How can they get it wrong so many times?

if your hinting about the ref for tonights game, i totally agree with you, this ref was shocking, apparently hes a local police officer in a town in western australia! i didnt agree with any of his calls, i think he needs to read over the rule book again.

was disgraceful. but not the reason why we lost feel the same way, as bad as the refereeing was, it had nothing to do with us being beaten

Who was the ref by the way?
I think the standard in the A-League as a whole is very disappointing, it seems that the standard in the play has stepped up but I don't think the refereeing has (not that I saw alot of NSL games). I'm sure others could be more knowledgable on this subject.

The referring in all games this week and past weeks has been shocking! Are they employing world cup refs now?

Glad this came up, glad I'm not the only one who's been thinking about this over the last couple of weeks. Like other people, I'm not blaming the ref entirely for our loss tonight - we were poor on the 50/50 balls and Andre's absence showed how important he is to the team. But, why did the ref blow the whistle when he did for their first goal? The established custom over decades of refereeing ( if not technically the rule) is that, at a free kick, the ref will have a word to the attacking players, have a word to the defensive wall then walk well away from the ball and then blow the whistle for the free kick. Its not rocket science, but apparently A League refs don't know this. Is it just me, or did the ref wink at Lazaridis before he blew the whistle Seriously, the poor quality of refereeing is going to be a big problem for the league. We seem to have home town refereeing every week, and that can't be good for the credibility of the league. I'm not suggesting an Italian-style bribery scandal, but the FFA seems to have on its roster a lot of refs who are really reluctant to make calls against what they think will be a hostile home crowd. We have marquee players, maybe we need marquee referees? Pierliugi Collina isn't doing much these days, maybe the FFA could pay him good money to spend a few weeks in the Aussie sun and show local refs how its done

I think the blame is more accurately laid at the feet of the terrible linesman. Refs dont call offsides wrong, miss off the ball stuff (or on the ball if it is Melbourne).
They are the real problem

I can't recall seeing anything the AR did wrong Sat night, your comment leaves me a little confused...unless you're just talking about generally? I think the FFA have been giving a lot of B panel refs a run lately, though I could be wrong, haven't been paying too close attention. It was an interesting piece of refereeing by blowing the whistle just as he was about to take the kick....... I had a pretty lousy seat at Kendall, so I can't really comment on the other decisions, though I'm still trying to figure out what one of our cards was for

The refs are quite bad at the moment in my opinion - but at least they don't give out 3 cards to a player in the same match... they could always be worse.

Thanks all, glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks the standard of refing is too low. I know it wasn't the ref that cost us the game against Perth, but all through the pre-season it has been pretty poor, admittedly not as bad as we get in Womens All Age, but still poor.
