Having Dwight Yorke and Ned Zelic sign to play in the A-League, should the Mariners be after a Marque player. If you would like to see a player please nominate who you'd like to see in our jersey.

I voted no.
I don't think a marquee player will siut the Mariners' philosophy and their emphasis on team spirit and team work

Agreed and we can't afford one! waste of money spend it on the youth program.

Pieman, if we go forward a couple of rounds in the club challenge, that make a big difference to the $$'s in the bank and mean we can talk about the possibility of a marquee player a little further on?

I voted no. I don't think a marquee player will siut the Mariners' philosophy and their emphasis on team spirit and team work On the field and in the change rooms, I'd tend to agree. In that respect I've never really been a big fan of Marquee players and the money could best be spent elsewhere, too. However, the right marquee player can/should potentially bring benefits to the club - and the team - in other ways. Namely, crowds, media attention and even sponsorship. I believe a club like the Mariners should only do it if the right player came along, as opposed to just for the sake of it.

Agreed and we can't afford one! waste of money spend it on the youth program. I would prefer to see 11 young blokes on the pitch playing good football then some old "hasbeen" crowd attracting git! e.g. that's all Yorke is going to be for Sydney FC.

I believe a club like the Mariners should only do it if the right player came along, as opposed to just for the sake of it. I'm with Rubbernose, if the right player came along that wasn't going to disrupt our ethos then I'd be all for it. For example if a Chipperfield or a Skoko got tired of the Swiss or Turkish leagues and decided to come back here to help get the A-League off the ground for the sake of future generations then I'd happily accept them. Those 2 are both 29, they definitely aren't washed up, they are Australians and would be here for the right reasons, to raise the profile of the League, to pass on their experience to the local players so they are directly and indirectly raising the standard of football, and they bring money to the league through bums on seats and sponsorship, so the next set of Chipperfields and Skokos wont feel the need to go overseas in the first place. As for a has been Euro player who wants to have a lazy few twilight years jogging around in the Australian sun, spend the money elsewhere.

I can see both sides, a marquee player would hopefully bring in more people, plus teach the young kids a lot from their experience. It would also be good for the A League and give Australian football a better profile. I don't agree that they are just 'has beens', they may have lost some pace but the technical skills are still the same. Saying that with it being the first season for the mariners I don't think we should sign a high profile player unless the right name comes along at a reasonable price.

If your marquee player comes for the right reasons like Ferguson, Tobin and Petrie did when they came to Spirit then he could be of immense value to the club. Mariners will carry on receiving the benefit of their wealth of experience. When we are rolling in money then maybe the management will choose wisely with a specific purpose and good reason. If we buy Nicola Berti then the only person you would please is Striker 9 ;D

Marquee players are good in principale but for the moral of the team and the well being of fiances, No.
We have lots of experinence in Fergie, Petrie etc and they can teach the boys all they need to know.
To pay an exubarent (sp) amount of money for one player is silly if not dangerous. Injuries happen frequantly and to have money sitting on the side lines is fiancancial suicide.
This may sound pesimistic but Scottish Football is up the Sh!tt£r because teams were paying large sums of money for players because they were budgeting to get X amount unfortantely thy made alot less and are now in administration.

I think a marquee player is a great idea if the player is chosen on potential for the team and club. look past the numerous has beens that have come before and think about the spin offs Dwight Yorke will bring to sydney fc, whether you like it or not he will pull people through the turnstiles and initially that is what you would want. Then think of the younger guys in their squad who will have the opportunity to learn off a player of that calibre.Spend money to make money. In saying that I think the squad at the mariners will be competitive enough.

Sorry but you have to have Alot of people coming throught the Gates to pay $750K.
The only thing they'll learn of him is how to drink p1ss, And for that kind of money I'll do it.
If you hadn't guessed I think paying a lot of money for a show pony is not good business.
There's not I in TEAM
