This is the big selection headache for next week and worthy of its own thread! Tough to call. What I will say is that starting Matty yesterday was a big call from Lawrie and it was definitely the right one. Looking at Kwas when he came on he looked unfit still so in hindsight the choice might not have been that difficult, but still, it worked out great

He was great and the never-say-die was instrumental in JA 2nd. Harsh, harsh call for offside on the replay. I told him after the match that "it will always count with us" but he was still showing the pain of not being in the scoresheet Matty to score the winner in the GF

Hard to drop anyone on yesterday's performance, team clicked very well together.
Jedi and Wilko give the up the middle spine strength and speed, all great sides have this spine.
But it is a good headache. and subs of quality.

I think the standing ovation Matty got as him came off said it all. He was brilliant.

Lawrie hardly ever changes a winning team, and next week should be no exception.

. i think matty's first touch is better than sash (and i am not just talking about last night)
. i also think more can come from a simon/aloisi combination
. and despite what has been a constant criticism of matty on here i don't he needs to muscle up in the upper body - if anything he needs to build up his legs more for stability. but yesterday he showed he can hold the ball up well and use his body
. occassionally a relative lack of experience is evident and perhaps goes to ground a little easy
. he gets my vote to partner aloisi next week - it may also motivate sash as a late sub

He was great yesterday but Sasho has to come back in.

I thought Matty played really well. He worked well with Aloisi and he created space. Sasho is a little like a statue up front. Go Matty Simon! Hope he starts on Sunday.

When the real fight near the end of the season gets going we need people who have the experience and temprament to get the job done under a lot more pressure and for me Sasho is the choice.
Matty has been developing rapidly and Aloisi and he seemed to have a fair understanding of each other yesterday which given time will obviously continue to grow.

As well as Simon played on Saturday he still wont start ahead of Sasho, Sasho is our leading goal scorer and he scored a goal in the last game he played for us before being suspended, its not like he is playing badly and needs to be shocked back into form... If anything he may be substituted reasonably early if he isnt tearing up Perth and Simon will come on. I will agree tho that Simon and Aloisi combine much better than Petrovski and Aloisi

If this is about comparing Matt Simon to Sasho, the simplest way to summarise my impressions would be that Matty does a lot more hard work in the lead-up. Created a lot of chances yesterday, a lot of them by saving possession from being given away, then making a great opportunity out of it.
Sasho, on the other hand, seems to have the ability to spot an opportunity and jump on it, if it is there in front of him, without doing so much hard work and running around.
Ideally they could both learn a bit from each other.

That said I never wouldve thought id see the day this season where we would have a selection headache up front this year, a month ago

I've been pretty critical of Matty so far - to be honest, I haven't seen any reason to rate him at all. Potential, yes, but he didn't seem to be realising any of it. Last night he certainly started to realise his potential....he played a lot better, won more balls then usual, made some nice touches, and just played with a lot more spirit. Considering I think one of his biggest problems may be stepping up to the plate mentally, I think firing the fark up did him the world of good. Although he still isn't what you'd expect from a tall lanky striker Seriously though, I think Sasho should still start ahead of him, but IF Simon continues to improve (And I don't think we've seen the best he's got to offer) then he could be an awesome striker, particularly in a couple of years.

A combination of threads with this comment.
Your hate and letters/emails to fox about their commentary must have worked.
Andy Harper talked more about how good Simon's is/was playing then i have heard him talk about Junihio all season.

Andy Harper talked more about how good Simon's is/was playing then i have heard him talk about Junihio all season. Good call. I watched the replay...it really was the Matt Simon feature show. Thinking about Matt getting that sort of exposure and coverage, how good is it? I was thinking, this guy was just playing winter super league before this - not even NSW premier league. Mariners offer him a pathway and now he's showing he can hold his own at A-League level with the potential to get even better. How many more kids like this are out there who could be getting a run instead of all the Clebersons/Jorge Drovandis/Claudinhos/etc etc etc? I would even say Matt S is growing into more of a cult hero here than what Jardel is up in Scumtown. Whether someone like Matt can go onto Socceroos is another thing but in some instances you could say that local talent is ignored for the sake of signing imports.

Yeah he had a great game and for the first time showed that he deserved a spot in the squad. I was very impressed. I'd still start Sasho alongside Aloisi next game. The good news is we won't have to see Kwas spooning them over the bar when either Sasho or Aloisi get injured.
BTW...Fox were much more Mariner friendly this game so you must have got up em nicely... apart from the fact they reported our crowd as 7.6K.

From Weekend Wrap - Round 12 on the A-League site: One to Watch
Starts for Matt Simon have been few and far between at Central Coast, but injury and suspension provided him with a chance to start alongside John Aloisi on Saturday against Adelaide and he took it with both hands. Tall, strong and willing to put himself about are his trademarks and was in full evidence, as he created havoc amongst the Adelaide defenders. He had a goal disallowed for offside and while he didn’t get the assist for Aloisi’s second goal, it was his perseverance that allowed Hutchinson to get the cross in initially. He has certainly put the pressure on coach Lawrie McKinna on whether or not to give him another start this week against Perth.

I see only positives to come out of starting Matty Simon. Apart from a physical point of view, the psychological points are
1/further confidence to an up and coming striker 2/message to sasho that he's really gotta push to get back on 3/message to the rest of the team that no one is safe
and I don't see too many benefits for having sasho start (apart from the obvious one, he is a talent!)
really interesting to see what lawrie does.
