i often have the argument with several of my mates about the name of soccer/football.. in Australia soccer should be known as soccer, and for alot of other countries for that fact.. rugby league / rugby union / AFL have the right to be labled 'football / footy'.. i was disgusted recenetly when a 'marinator' commonly known as Wok said to me "Hey Neil wanna come to the footy tonight?", i came close to spitting in his face.. enough is a enough.. soccer is soccer.. NOT footy.. NOT football.. SOCCER..

Jeez you sound like a top bloke, great first post. League, Rugby, Aussie Rules, FOOTBALL...... but i only think that because football, Real football i mean, has been around longer than any of the other codes that hijacked its name. But thats just my opinion. I wont spit in your face if you disagree, because i am Danio and thats not they way i play it.

I don't know how old you are, so if you are a teenager I will forgive you ... the last 20-30 years we've had so much propaganda against our game you wouldn't that know you are wrong! It also depends where you grew up for the same reasons! When I grew up over 50 years ago it was football always in my area! On this forum the game the Mariners play is football! I'll agree with you on one thing though - it is never 'footy'!

As my stepfather, the Englishman, says, why the hell should we call it football in Australia??? We r Australians, we do our things different here. Its been soccer here for how many years??? Why change whats not broken???
I say call it what you like, but dont force your opinions on me. For me, its soccer, and will be forever, and thats my opinion.
And on this forum, the game the mariners play is not football, its a game, and everyone can call it whatever they like, u dont speak for everyone on here.

ps add up the number of players playing your footy codes against ours on the coast and you'll find that even together we have more.... xoxo

i will apologise on neil's behalf here, he is unfortunately a friend and a smart-arse, he played league for one year and didnt have the skill to go any good, so he quit, i'd hate to see what would've happened if he played football. as for where he grew up, neil lived in queensland and then moved down to kincumber a few years ago. he is a classic example of a person that thinks football is a "nancy" game and thinks league is much harder (even though most of our players play for 90 minutes and rarely stop running, not too mention the advanced skill level). as for his comment about him coming "close to spitting in my face" when i asked "do u wanna come to the footy", first of all i was just geeing him up because of his loathing of the sport, and secondly, he is obviously also a liar because i asked him that on msn (internet chat) so the idea of spitting in my face would've been physically impossible. it's people like this that are so insecure of themselves that they won't go to or watch a game because they think they might like it, and for some reason they think there is something wrong with that. this is why we are not getting even more succesful crowd numbers to our games.

Soccer.. or possibly football i can deal with.. never footy.. never.. i grew up in qld, and soccer was always known as soccer.. i recently moved to the central coast (3 years ago) and it has been known as soccer up until recently, when i believe the formally known 'central coast soccer association' was changed to 'central coast football association', i'm not quite sure if it has even been changed but i know there was talk of it.. ive been to one game of soccer, and it convinced me of how boring the sport is.. it was cc mariners vs. sydney fc before the season for the world qualifier or some shit, and the score was like 0-0

^^^lol @ MM
If you want to be taken seriously, get educated. The fact that you try to have an opinion when you only know half the story, (and knowing RL and not knowing football would be like knowing the dictionary but only words with less than 4 letters) seems to pigeon hole you into the typical 'eggballus ignoramus' species.
You say league is more diverse than football...ACTUALLY if you had bothered to learn both games, and I'd like to think I know a bit about both, you would know which sport is more repetitive.
You know the 6-tackle law? Why was that introduced? To stop the same thing happening over and over and over, because catching and running in one direction, forward, isn't that imaginative. There are no such laws in football, saying you have to give the ball to the other team after 5 passes, because it actually requires intelligent build-up and possession-risking endeavour to attack, rather than a one-leg-after-the-other forward motion.
And lets talk briefly about formations. 4-4-2, 3-5-2, 5-3-2, 4-3-3, 3-4-3, wingbacks, 'in the hole', holding midfielders, sweepers, free role...there are basically hundreds of different ways the 11 players can be sent out in the world game. In Rugby League there is basically one, a line. The only basic difference might be a slide defence or up and in, or perhaps putting a big second rower wider in the line to challenge a smaller opponent.
But tactically it's all worked out beforehand and there are no decisions to make from anyone but the number 6,7 or 9 for the rest of the game. In football, every player must know his role inside out, with a whole field on which you basically go anywhere at any time, it's a lot more complicated that a defensive line, and if you f*** up once, that could mean a goal to the other team, which is of course extremely bad news when one goal is often the winning margin. Since the ball and the players can go more places more quickly than on a football field, there are simply far more variables as to what is happening around a player, and the on-the-spot decision making is what separates a good footballer from a better one. As opposed to having more muscle mass (assuming the basic human functions of catching, throwing and running are already owned).
And as far as the whole football/soccer thing, I'm not going to bite anybody's head off when they call it soccer. It will take time for the people to learn, these things cant just be announced and immediately become imbedded into people's brains. But, the word soccer comes from Football Association (that little soc in there) so it's pretty clear that football is the correct name. I dont see why Australia should be cut off from the rest of the world in this sense. It's the official name and it should be used AT LEAST in official usages, if not in general conversation also.
But sports have nicknames, rugby can be called footy and football can be called soccer, it's all good. in my opinion football can be called footy also, it's a nickname for any football code, of which the real football is one.
