FFA Media Release
Thursday, 9 March 2006
Following the success of the inaugural Hyundai A-League season, Football Federation Australia (FFA) will hold the Hyundai A-League Awards Night next Monday (13th March 2006) at Doltone House on Sydney Harbour.
In line with the new brand of Football in Australia, this event will be “an awards night but not as you know it”. More MTV than Brownlow or Dally M, the nights proceedings will be hosted by self-proclaimed football fanatic Adam Spencer and will feature the presentation of the Johnny Warren Medal for the Hyundai A-League Player’s Player of the Year.
The Johnny Warren Medal, named in honour of the late-great former Socceroo captain, was voted for by the 160-players from the eight Hyundai A-League clubs after rounds 7, 14 & 21 on a 3-2-1 basis. Players that received direct red cards were deemed ineligible to receive this award.
The Johnny Warren Medal was designed by Dan Flynn from Flynn Silver, the Victorian company that also designed the 2003 Rugby World Cup Medals and more recently the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games Medal Lanyards. The Johnny Warren Medal is composed of Sterling Silver and 24-Carat gold and features the Southern Cross set with diamonds surrounded by sixty two stars representing each of the sixty two A-Internationals that Johnny Warren played for Australia. The Southern Cross was chosen as the central design feature not only for it’s Australian symbolism, but also as it appears on the Brazilian National Flag, a country that Johnny Warren held dear to his heart.
In addition, the Hyundai Rising Star award for the most outstanding Under 20 player, the Hyundai A-League Coach of the Year Award, Hyundai A-League Fair Play Award, Zurich Referee of the Year Award and the Reebok Golden Boot Awards will also be presented on the night.
