I think in general the A-League have got it right, but there are a couple of issues that I think should be addressed.
1 - Get rid of New Zealand and bring in Woolongong. NZ are not even in the same FIFA conference as us. Woollongong met all of the criteria required for qualification into the A-League, Now Zuland met none. In my opinion Woollongong were robbed.
2 - Get some games on free-to-air TV. Maybe even bring in two new teams so that there is one extra match per week. Foxtel could then still have four live games per week and one live game per week for a FTA channel. You would think that Foxtel would come to the party if there was some sort of cross promotional component to the deal.
3 - Make Sydney and Melbourne change their strips. I think the A-League have been a little short sighted in allowing these teams to basically trot out in a 'state' uniform. What happens down the track? I say leave the door open for a 'State of Origin' type series. For example: Make Sydney add a minor colour to their strip (lets say... pink!) and over the next few years make the pink more and more dominant and the dark blue less and less dominant. Eventually their colours will be pink and blue, leaving the double blue clear for the NSW state team.
3 - Where are the stripes? Who's ever heared of an entire league without at least one team in stripes.
Wadda the rest of you think?

i'll leave aside the NZ dilemma - i can take or leave them, and don't much care beyond 'if they're gonna be in, they'd better be decent'.
wollongong is a bad idea just now - 4 nsw teams would make the comp even more lopsided to this state - a 2nd victorian team would be the go IMHO.
the tv deal's just been done and dusted, and i can only presume FTA was floated but the assessment was made that the cable tv funding was too good to refuse - at 1.8m per club per year, i'm inclined to agree for the moment. keeps crowds up too, but there should be a blackout on broadcasts to host cities.
sydney and melbourne's strips are fine, there's no need for a state of origin type strip. they at least have some relevance to the towns, unlike say... perth, newcastle or qld's strips. ours is at least arguably sand and surf.
and i'm right up for the stripes. well, hoops more like. for us in fact. i think we'd look tops in gold and blue hoops. this may have something to do with my team (the mighty... except last weekend... sydney uni AA6) having gold and blue hoops.

the uniforms are good so far, all staying in the one uniform direction, so it doesnt make the opening years of the A-league too complex. they will eventually change as the years roll on.
Wollongong didnt apply for the A-league i am led to believe. so it will be a while, maybe four or five fully successful years of A-league to consider a new team. i think its too late seeing nsw have three of the eight teams. instead i would like to see an asian team from say Thailand or in that vacinity be introduced. and maybe the likes of Geelong, which is the same distance from Syd to Newcastle, but there might be ethnic issues if introduced, and im sure the FFA have planned it so there is no real room for ethnicity to dominate any clubs profile. who knows. i think Queensland should move to Gold Coast as Suncorp will prove to be a liability if hard times do and probably will, come around.
dunno, there is plenty, but i am happy with the A-league so far. maybe the officials need to get better?

this thread has been done allot of times, especially on each subject.
1. wollongong is to close to sydney, to many teams in the NSW, bring in ethier townsville or gelong. getting rid of a team so soon would just make the league look bad.
2. i think foxtel hold the rights to all A-league games, and arent really that willing to exhange talks, mabye with more teams later on, there will be more matches on at the same time and same day, so, then free to air might come into it.
3. im sure we can live without stripes for a few seasons, i think the repeated design of jersys wasnt a bad idea for the start of this whole thing. they will change in time.

1. Wollongong can't be robbed if they didn't apply (and they didn't PB is right), the FFA could only choose from what was infront of them and the sides that missed out were Sydney (I think 2 other teams) and Adelaide. The 8 there were the right decision at the time, despite being shit now.
2. Foxtel want to air EVERY game (live?) next year but I'd love the highlights show and/or a game of the week on FTA as well, but don't hold your breath.
3. Teams shouldn't be forced to change their strips just because it's state colours, they made that decision for a number of reasons, it'd be bad to change colours now when trying to build up support.

1. Add a couple more teams in a couple of years when we have a better picture of the league's medium-term prospects. Playing the same seven teams all the time will start to get stale. Ten teams will extend the season to 27 games, which will be a good thing. I'd add a second Melbourne team, and another team from Queensland if there is support for it (I think Townsville is locked out by rugby league).
2. I was very disappointed that SBS didn't get some role in A-League coverage. They stood by the game during dark periods and now don't get the rewards of a popular domestic league. Maybe they can renegotiate either one live match a week or an extended Match of the Day-style highlights package.
3. Teams' strips aren't that important. They're currently a bit identikit, but I'm sure Reebok offered more money to sponsor all of the league's strips than any of the clubs could have received organising it themselves. Compulsory away strips are stupid. Reminds me of basketball.

1. More teams or replacing NZKFC? Leave as is for at least the first 3 years. Enough NSW teams for now, regional Victorian, 2nd Adelaide teams next up or maybe an ACT team? Expansion maybe in 4 -5 years time, let's establish some derbies- some history between the existing A-League teams first. Create the demand to expand and allow the pioneering clubs the benefit of hopefully full stadiums, before more teams split loyalties. 2.FFA and Foxtel deal. Foxtel took the deal and ran with it first up providing several games nationally, albeit on pay-TV. Thanx to the success of the first season, Foxtel now prepared to pay more, which helps existing clubs. Maybe Foxtel could sell a highlights package to FTA, say on a Sunday arvo? But would the FFA get some $ for that if it's allowed in existing deal? 3. Away strips being compulsory and all white were crap this season. Don't know how the media handled the archiving of these games - every second team in the games is in white! FFA has said that clubs can design their own away strip. Good to see this white away strip relaxed for Finals series, where the teams both played in their home strips if there wasn't a colour clash. Other things: 1. Full time professional roster of referees and linesmen. I don't know if last season's lot were full time professional or not, but at times they were bloody amateur! 2. Review the 20 man playing roster. With the speed the A-League games were played there were inevitable injuries, our team suffering more than some. The short term playing contract can be abused too. Do the teams need more players on roster, or a standby roster (meaning players nominated and on standby should their services be needed)?

On the subject of uniforms. Clubs should be able to sign their own uniform sponsor. All the Reebok money went to the FFA. The clubs had to buy their own gear for f***s sake!!!

1) Get rid of NZ, they add nothing. Replace with Gold Coast (to play out of the new RL stadium they are building) or Townsville.
2) A highlights show on SBS a few days after the weekend would help those without Foxtel (which is presumably why they wont do it.
3) Kits are fine (except for the stupid all white away strip rule). Refereeing isnt too bad, its the linesmen who are appalling.

whats a competion?
maybe like an FA cup format, with the state league teams playing a knock out and then introduce the A-league teams in the later rounds. thatd be awesome if they held that midweek.

It'd be cool, that's for sure, but not very viable for now.
The state teams couldn't afford to fly around the country so it'd have to be played in state conferences until the last rounds, so basically the champions of the state cups wait until their offseasons then try to beat a-league teams....boring.
We need all football to be played in the same season, we need lucrative prizes for progression through the comp, we need enough interest to bring in big crowds midweek, and i'm sure much more that isn't popping straight into my head like the points above!
It's all in the future though, lets hope sooner rather than later.

That's the format I'd like to see (CCMFC V CCL final??), the hard thing is that it's offseason for the state leagues. As for the stuff up, my keyboard is crap, yea I know, shit excuse.

i never liked the idea of NZ in the australian national comp
it's not about the money......once u play football for money, it loses it's meaning. play football for football.
this is the a-league. we can play the thailand team when we meet in the champions league. do you see a spanish team playing in the EPL?
