Just wondering - do people here think that Kevin Muscat is good for the HAL or bad for the HAL?
On the downside, he makes referees look like idiots with the stuff he gets away with and turns the game into a bit of a farce to the point where you could argue he holds the game in contempt. A lot of people think he's an absolute tosser and get fed up with his cheating, thuggish attitude - and the fact that he gets away with blue murder on a pretty regular basis. Then there's the issue of the safety of the opponents...
On the upside - surely each sport needs villians as well as heroes? Are villians such as this a necessary evil in a game? Each sport has its villians, and it's heroes. Or does sport only need heroes?
Does his presence - because of his thuggish attitude - make it a bit more exciting and passionate, and thus is ultimately good for the league? Or is his attitude ultimately bad for the league?
This isn't really intended to be another thread attacking Muscat (though it'll probably end up like that), but it is something I've been musing over, and considering all the Muscat-related activity on the board I figured now was as good a time as any to put it up for discussion.
Be interested in hearing people's opinions....

Kevin Muscat is good for the a-league as he provides plenty of talking points which get talked about on general sports show which will get the word around about the a-league;and he is a decent player(am i talking crap???)

. true he does draw attention to himself and the league, but is that the right sort of attention . do we want to be inundated with rugby league types coming to watch some argy-bargy and the odd nasty off the ball incident? . we have enough injury problems as it is . however the mariners intensity did seem to drop off as well when MuchCat was sent from the field (never liked the guy personally)

Bad for humanity more like. Raises the average age and lowers the average IQ of any team he plays for.
That Slater and his ilk suck up to him and fawn over his majesty makes me feel sick.
(Can we reverse our ban on THAT word for this thread?? No discussion about him seems complete without it)

Or Christiano Ronaldo.
Duioff (spelling?).
Could probably add Hutchinson in there.
He is a former Socceroo. He brings both good and bad publicity to the game. The A-league without Muscat is like the EPL with out Roy Keane (at Celtic now).

Sorry! How could I forget he is managing an even more hated team by myself than you guys!
f*** The Mackems.
Might get a Tyne-Wear derby if they can stay in the Fizzy-Pop League....

Its a tough question. On one hand, you could argue that all publicity is good publicity, if it gets the word out about the a-league. But if its talk of fights and the like then its not good, its not what the fans of the a-league are about.
As for heroes and villians, I dont think you need evil overlord people playing dirty like muscat. Generally, a Mariners Hero will be a villian to all the other teams, so I think muscat is generally not needed, nor is good for the league. The sooner he is gone, along with slater and all the various hanger's on, the sooner more people can move in and get some of our own a-league traditions, rather than continuing the bad old ones.

F*ck Muscat - he's a dirty thug who I have _no_ time for and brings nothing to the table in Melbourne that couldn't be had from any other player. "Ohhhh, wow, I'm playing DM and all of a sudden the team's going well - ohhhhh look, Brebner is playing even better than I am in a similar position, and he's not a thug".
So sick of this double standard bullshit when it comes to refereeing....... all players have to be treated the same, it's that simple. Memo to Breeze, Shields, and the rest of you. I don't care whether the foul was by the home team or the away team and I don't care who did it - use your cards and don't be afraid to do so.

Could probably add Hutchinson in there. Why? Its not because he celebrated his goal infront of the squadron is it?

We have enough opposition players to "hate" (in the sporting sense) without needing a dirty little thug. It is not as though he is the "hard man" he and others make himself out to be. He is a coward who mostly king hits people behind play or continually niggles. When you add his slimy crawling to referees and inability to "cop it sweet" it is a pretty ugly picture. We do not need it.

I'm inclined to agree now. He's not a hard man at all, I already knew that. He's a dirty little coward. Look at the cheap shots...remember against Sydney last year, big melee in the middle of the pitch, he runs in and studs somebody in the calf. We can have vililans without anybody going to the extremes he does. Take Bolton, he's a good villian His comments after getting sent off really show his (lack of) character, that was completely pathetic.
