lol Gold Coast have just got NRL and the Kangaroos will now play 3 or 4 games a season up there so it's a crowded market.
Is there a soccer stadium in Gold Coast? don't think there is Isn't Queensland Roar ment to cover ALL of Queensland and if there is another Queensland team northern Queensland would have to be infront because the Gold Coast can drive 45 min to Suncorp while Northern queensland have to pay $200 airfare.
Here's my prediction for teams in 2010 Central Coast sydney newcastle Brisbane (not Queensland) perth Adelaide Melbourne North Queensland wollongong Geelong or Gippsland Tassie Gold Coast or Canberra

I've read the article, and if you want to promote Regional teams, I would have thought Geelong a better option?

So you think the Queensland Roar would be the Brisbane Roar? Yea because with North Qld and maybe Gold Coast in the league, it does not represent the whole of Qld anymore so they'd have to change there name.

. roar have set themselves for a monopoly or a fall from grace with any future name change . the article does have some positive comments about the mariners - who would have thought eh! . foreigner - i think (i am sure many will disagree) tassie is a good idea but i hope that wouldn't mean switching allegiances . i still think another vic. team would be warranted, but tassie could stand up like the coast in a national competition (other than cricket) and generate a bit of support with no previous ties

the comparisons to the central coast are obvious - growing area near a another major city, community looking to establish itself and differentiate itself, etc
the MAJOR difference is that they already have national teans there

I've read the article, and if you want to promote Regional teams, I would have thought Geelong a better option? not in a pink fit - no ground, no growth in the town (relies heavily on the ford plant for jobs, and we all know the present state of manufacturing...). if there was to be a mariners analogue in victoria it'd be out the south east end.

Yea because with North Qld and maybe Gold Coast in the league, it does not represent the whole of Qld anymore so they'd have to change there name. incidentally, i heard from a (banana bending) mate of mine that townsville is really unusual climatically speaking for its latitude - where most places up there are humid as a truckie's armpit, it's got some weird microclimate going on that keeps it relatively dry, meaning that it'd probably be not as completely unbearable to play football there in summer as you'd otherwise think.

. interesting, one of the girls at work lived in townsville for a few of years (her hubby is in the army) . she said it was practically unbearable in summer (heat and humidity) and was followed by a month or so of constant rain around feb. . would hope that the stadium is in this weird micro-climate that you speak of, wouldn't want any mariners dropping through heat exhaustion

That's what?...the Gippsland area? My second choice would be a Tassie team, if they can meet the criteria (not altering the A-League criteria just for them - the NSL had a history of changing criteria just to placate football politics). A Tassie team would give the A-League genuine National Comp bragging rights against other national comps, but I'm sceptical that a Tassie syndicate could meet all that's required for a franchise. And with no other national comp. team, the "local" support should come to the fore quite prominently should they be able to have a reasonable season. Gold Coast, I feel, is a hiding to nothing.

Gold Coast makes no sense as a team really. If you put another team in Qld you would have to put Townsville in first. They have a history of being able to successfuly support national comp teams. Gold Coast...look at the last Gold Coast team...the Gold Coast Seagulls in the League back when it was still the NSWRL. The Gold Coast Titans have been admitted to the NRL starting I think next season? I dont see them as being successful...look at all the other clubs....how many of them are actually self sustaining? People fought and fought to get the Rabbitohs back in the comp and look at how successful they've been. Tassie would be a solid addition to the comp provided there was the initial grassroots support.

Dont forget they are building a new ground for the Titans (apparently they play some game that used to be quite popular once) 25,000 rectangular ground and maybe fancy another tennant.

the gold coast has had how many flops? the giants? seagulls? and something else? despite its glamourous image it has lots of unemployed and lower paid jobs so the money will only go so far. as was said above the big difference is they have a national team (and have had them in the past) where the Central Coast had previously been overlooked. i'd prefer Wollongong but nth queensland would be OK but no way should the Gold coast be given a team yet

Yes it's true Tassie is full of AFL fans and no one even knows what the A-league is down here. it's so bad that 2 people in my grade at school know what the a-league is. we don't get any scores on the news, we get a 8 line comment in the paper and i'm forced to get results of the internet. We only got 6,000 people to a pre-season match because it was played in Launceston (Launceston is a hole were scums live).Hobart is packed with junior soccer fans it's just that older people have a hatred for soccer and our government has a naming rights deal with hawthorn in the AFL. The major problem is that our only national sporting team, the tassie tigers cricket team play at exactly the same time so for some games we might get "New Zealand crowds". But tassies are so used to supporting other teams that when we do get a national sporting team and when there playing well everyone will suppport them. we have the facilities and everything but what we don't have is the diehard support from both the people and the business areas.
