Well I'll eat my words re: Milligan. He was perfect against the small quick attackers of Thailand.
Much better than the likes of Neill giving foul after foul away.
We sat back in our own half, on our own box, and stacked the defence. It was up to Thailand to break us down and they were unable to. Meggsi's goal was crucial as we needed to make use of set pieces playing this defensive, counterattacking football. The final goals were bonuses as a breakaway finally worked and Thailand committed men forward as they had to.
I believe though if we play that negatively against Japan, they will be able to score against us. We need to show some willingness to keep the ball and gain some territory. Sitting much deeper in defence with numbers looks like the way to go but we need to retain possession.
Individually Milligan was superb and Cahill got three assists. He must start. Dave Carney did a job, credit to him. Good to see Viduka scoring goals although he should perhaps be the super sub with Aloisi, Kewell and Cahill the front three.
My team for Japan
Schwarzer
- - Neill Milligan Meggsi Emmo - - Grella - - - Wilko - - - Culina - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - -- Kewell - - - - - Cahill -- - - - - - - - - - -- - Aloisi

all i can say is thank god finally for japan my eleven is 5-4-1 with
-----------------------schwarzer -------------Neill---Beauchamp---Milligan Emerton--------------Culina------------------Carney Sterjovski--------------------------------------Kewell -------------------------Cahill ------------------------Viduka leave bresciano, grella and wilkshire out of starting lineup until they can find some form. and i didnt believe sterjovski was so bad against oman to warrant being left out

milligan was awesome last night, deserves his starting spot unquestionable man of the match (viduka : i am still not convinced with carney but i suppose we have no option on the left too many times last night he was pawned and most of thailand's attacks/crosses came from their right hand side subsequently meggsy and sometimes milligan was dragged out trying to cover, leaving holes in the middle in which thailand should have buried a couple japan will punish us for those mistakes anyway, will make for an interesting journey back from orange to see if we can make the 8:20pm kick off jeff, do you know what is happening with cclc and coverage?

Hmm alcohol, football and football players, what more could a girl ask for... well they generally don't say no to diamonds, beachfront property and sports cars so maybe you should add them to your list.

Hi again,
On Mick's suggestion (thank you, MM):
We are pleased to announce that the players and officials from BOTH clubs have been cordially invited to join us to watch the Socceroos-Samurai Blue game at the Royal Hotel, Orange from 7.30pm onwards this Saturday Night.
We have spoken with CCMFC and they were happy to take our invitation to both groups, which is great news. It would be fascinating to watch the Roos with our gaffer and the lads.
Regards,
AM

Nah, I prefer to be realistic..... plus there are only so many places you can wear diamonds, sports cars breakdown and depending on your beliefs about global warming, beachfront property isn't to safe either.

milligan was great last night carney wasnt fantastic but did ok meggsi was solid, great goal! i thought grella struggled, and has struggled this tournament. he gets through a heep of work but is giving the ball away a little too often to lose 4-0 is not a reflection of how the thais played, we were very lucky hopefully playing a "stronger" nation in japan might fire the players up a bit more

On goes my sooky rant hat.
That was better (which wasn't hard) and Thailand are probably better than most people expected but I still thought we were, overall, absolute garbage. Compared to the team we were 12 months ago particularly, there is no comparison.
If it wasn't for Milligan, Meggsi, Emerton and to a lesser degree Carney (even though he was owned way too often as Mick posted) we probably would have lost that game too.
The central midfield were largely owned by a pack of semi-professional Ladyboys, no disrespect intended of course. Arnie, Arnie, Arnie, whaddya trying to do, patiently play Grella into some form? Or commit suicide? The guy is quite obviously having a dead set shocker, he's bordering on useless imho, and I think he might be colour blind too. Culina kinda runs around cleaning up some scraps too which is fair enough but he then predictably just passing it sideways or backwards, every single time, and offers zilch in attack. Against a team like Thailand - absolutely useless. No wonder Neill kept choofing it forward.
I have no idea how we can play two holding, defensive central midfielders (in front of a back 3, mind you) of such supposed quality and experience and still see a team like Thailand own them, peg them in, and constantly give the Thai's 10-15 yards of space in front of the defensive line. Anyone? Actually I do know, Grella is playing terrible, and it's making it very difficult to hold possession and play out too, let alone defend properly, especially when pressed.
Bresciano has the first touch of a cheap hooker, still, and he looks like he hasn't played in 6 months, and just constantly coughs up possession. And that's during his good 25 minute spell, then he goes MIA. He was marginally better last night because he was in his preferred inside possie, but he's still way below form. It doesn't help that the likes of Kewell, Cahill and even Grella are desperately short of games this year but in all three games our central midfield specifically has been dead set ghastly, I think.
Now ok, maybe Grella will somehow step up against a better side like Japan, and do a good job on Nakamura, we know he more than capable, but ya know, somehow I doubt it. Occams Razor. If Vince plays like he has in the last 4 games against Japan, we're going home, I'm convinced of that. I reckon we'd get far more value out of Wilkshire or Milligan in that role atm, if not the raw Valeri, or possibley just Culina.
It's almost tempting to leave Meggsi and Milligan in central defense against Japan, and move Neill to LB, if not move Milligan forward into the holding role based on last night's performance, because if we're confident in Milligan and Beauchamp in the centre, Neill would probably play LB better than anyone in the squad. Unless of course he's still riddled with what is seemingly a bad case of dickhead disease. Then again, it's also tempting to just add him in and stay with a back three.
And Holman. Brett Holman FFS. It might be impossible to be in as bad-a-form as Brett Holman is in, and still get a run. Almost defies belief that does.
Aloisi is also looking totally useless, and apart from scoring two (fairly sublime) goals, Viduka is looking very flat and ordianary too, not holding too many balls up at all, looks in poor touch to me, and is largely just walking around. But hey, at least he is scoring, so I shouldn't complain.
I reckon the Mariners would have topped this group.

Maybe play Milligan in Grella's midfield holding spot dead centre of field, Meggsi and Neill centre backs, Emerton RB and Wilkshire/Carney (gulp!) LB? Play Culina ahead of Milligan, replace him with Grella if he needs replacing. I didn't see the match last nigt, but if Milligan can impress those who have said he did well here, then he is obviously in good form and deserves a spot. And people are saying here, that Grella is flat tired, so maybe running MiIligan in Grella's spot (or playing him deeper in to defence) would be the go?
-------Schwarzer------ Emerton---Neill---Beauchamp---Wilkshire/Carney ------------------Milligan------------------------------ Strejovski-----Culina----------Kewell -----------Viduka-----Aloisi------

Ahoy hoy from Thailand (again)......
I'm curious as to what the atmosphere sounded like on TV - because barring the Australia/Uruguay game in '05, last night was without a doubt the craziest most bullshit nuts football atmosphere I have ever experienced. Fireworks, flares, noise so loud that you literally cannot hear the person next to you even if you are yelling at the top of your voice, the color, a military marching band, a giant (half the bay) Thai flag getting passed the entire way around the stadium, the rain, the Thai people singing, us doing our best to be heard (we succeeded somewhat) - it was beyond mental. If an A-League game was ever 1/10th of what I experienced last night then I would die a happy man.
Still, f*ck Viduka though. Lazy shit. I hope the headlines over there say "2 goals from an otherwise useless Mark Viduka".
MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEGGGGGGSSSSSYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!! (we had a few Mariners chants going after that, we got funny looks from people)
;D ;D ;D
Trying to organise an "emergency" visa and flight to Vietnam - will let you all know how I go.
