Forget the Australian Primier League. It seems the new national competition will be called.... The New National Competition (NNC). I kid you not. Check out the updated Australian Soccer Association (ASA) site for details: www.australiansoccer.com.au/public/article/show.asp?articleid=7884&menuItemID=514What on earth has possessed the ASA to come up with a name that doesn't even indicate what sport is involved. As if football doesn't have a hard enough job of getting media coverage.

Only an interim name for the bidding process Mr Celery!
I will be able to tell you after the media launch on Monday! It will be the Hyundai something!
APL is owned by the players association. It may be the Hyundai Premier Football League.....

Premier Football League sounds good, but I reckon the NZers have a better name for their league.
The New Zealand Football Championship.
I just reckon that is a good sounding name.

I don't mind the A-League.
Works on many levels. A for best, A for Australian, and a bit of a heads up to the Asian J-Leagues and K-Leagues et al.

In my humble view you have to crawl before you can walk before you can run.8* teams is a start and only a start, it is easier to ADD teams than to remove them as we have seen from previous attempts, sad thing is with only 1 team per city there are no real derby games. Closest thing will be Mariners V Newcastle and Sydney. Remember there is always room for expansion as long as they do it 2 teams at a time and avoid those stupid byes that upset any momentum that might have generated. Cheers D.C.

My bet is on a sponsorship link with the title something like The Hyundai "A" League. The "HA" League or mabye the "AH" League

I don't think any one noticed yet that the 'Hyundai A League' has the acronym HAL. Scary.......... I'm afraid you can't do that...DAVE PS. Hello to all you Breakers Rowdie types here. Looking forward to seeing you all together again at the 1st game.

Hey Dave
Are we going to see you in Mariners colours chanting behind the goals this year?
You vocal abilities will be very welcome.
We are starting to build a kick-arse fan group here - might even surpass the Shed.

I'll hoping to be there for the first few games...pendind no clashes with anything work related by the time the league gets going. I'll vibe it from there........ DM

The American experience definitely backs that up. They launched with 10, then expanded to 12, then two of the clubs that were still owned by the league were culled, and now they are back on the expansion path. The cull was a near thing in terms of scuttling the whole league. And as long as they leave open expansion in Sydney and Melborne (which to the best of my limited knowledge they HAVE done), then they can always open up expansion bids, and a viable bid from either Sydney, Melbourne or both means they can expand by one new city, and still expand two clubs at a time.

I do think 8 teams is too few as there are only 21 games with 3 "rounds", perhaps there should be another round, that way we'd get to go away up and down the Coast twice a season, plus it would even up the number of home and away games....

;DSuperb news!!! John O'Neill and co are going to dump the name Soccer Australia!!!! About time, the new federation will be called Football Australia. What was soccer anyway, I always called it football and if needed, mentioned the round ball. I can allready see rugby and aussie rules complaining and I love it!!!! Bring it on!!!

I have been told that the three rounds is only for the first year and that it will it will go to four rounds the next season when they are properly established. It seems that the new organisation is actually listening to the people.
