Mcmaster is an Australian as all you need is an Aussie passport not to be a visa player so even being a full international for another country wouldn't matter as long as you held an aussie passport? hmmm... [various clubs run off to DFAT offices to get passport forms]

Best wishes to the three of them. I was most surprised with Sully's departure. I hope they do well wherever they go.

opening up spots for prospective signings of non-Australian players is my guess. i think a 4 man limit's coming in. we have a scot (petrie), a german (gumps), an englishman (mcmaster - played youth internationals, don't know whether he counts, may have re-declared his nationality under what i'll call the cahill rule) and an irishman (sully) at the moment taking up all 4 spots. an englishman, an irishman, a scot and a german all walk into a football club... perth have done the same they have released webster (kiwi) to open up spots for foreign players it was in their press release Was Adrain Webster the bloke that had the punch up with Harnwell?

I'm not sure I see full value in an exclusive Spenny thread without Sully and Vuko. Not really fair.
But indeed thanks o those three guys for the effort put in. It wasn't for lack of trying that they have been released so they can't be faulted there.

Here's my tuppence worth on the 3 departures:
(1) Spencer - in a way, sorry to see him go. I don't think he played well at all this season, and I said so on more than one occasion. He did captain us to the grand final last season, though, and scored a number of important goals - the late winner against Sydney will always be one of my favourites! Also, he captained Spirit for a while, and along with McKinna and co was one of the reasons I chose Mariners over Bling.
(2) Sully - I agree with the 'why oh why' question. The guy may not be a spring chicken, but I always felt he offered a lot to the team - defending and going forward. Maybe McKinna has a replacement in mind, but that one DOES suprise me.
(3) Vuko - another of the ex-Spirit group gone. I know he had a lot of detractors on this forum, but I don't honestly feel he had a long enough run to prove his worth. People say he was frequently being caught out of position, but this tended to be because he was busting a gut trying to get forward and support the attack. Also, unlike 90% of the team, he can actually cross a ball and was always a threat at set pieces.

Thank you Mr Spencer, you were a great captain of a great club and you WILL be missed, well maybe not by the Dane Drive Boo Boys, but the rest of us will miss you, scored some of the most memorable goals of Season One.

An outstanding leader in season 1 and a worthy foundation captain. Will hopefully not be long before someone beats his record of captaining the Mariners in so many finals.

I gotta say thou this thread makes me chuckle, so many people on here have abused Spenny over the 2 years and now people are wishing him well and thanking him for everything!
I'll be the first to say I think he has played like a crab going sideways and backwards over the 2 years, but in season 1 he got away with it due to him scoring a few goals. Season 2 he has been very poor and I'm sure he would be the first to agree, the best thing he has done for this club is in the community which is a lot more important than what he's done on the field (in some ways)

Good luck to Spenny, he has been a good servant to the club and that in goal on a wet Friday night in Sydney will live with me forever. Not surprised to see him go after his performances this season and subsequent stick and if as I've posted else were if we get Jedi or better in then it seems the right move for the club.

Thanks for the first year, but he was disinterested for most of the second. He did not want to be there in the last game and it was obvious.
