CENTRAL COAST MARINERS FOOTBALL CLUB MEDIA RELEASE, MONDAY 26 FEBRUARY 2007
JEDINAK SIGNS PERMANENT DEAL FOR 2007/08
Former Australian youth international Mile Jedinak is the latest player to be added to the Central Coast Mariners’ playing roster for the 2007/08 Hyundai A-League season.
The 22-year-old midfielder today put pen to paper on a permanent deal with the Mariners, after starring for the Central Coast whilst on a short-term arrangement at the tail end of the 2006/07 Hyundai A-League season.
Jedinak’s eight Hyundai A-League appearances reignited the Mariners’ quest for a finals series berth in late 2006, with the giant midfield enforcer contributing to nearly half of the Mariners’ total points earned for the entire season in a little over a third of the total matches played.
Currently playing out the start of the new NSW Premier League season with reigning state champions Sydney United, Jedinak will link with his new teammates in early May, when the Central Coast will officially commence their pre-season program.
"We’re understandably delighted to be welcoming Mile to our club on a full-time basis, he was one of our more impressive performers towards the end of our 2006/07 Hyundai A-League season and we have complete faith that our supporters will see much of the same from one of Australia’s most exciting young talents in 2007/08," said Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.
"We know that Mile has what it takes to compete, and excel at Hyundai A-League level, having already witnessed the consistency of his performances from his limited time with us last season.
"Now that Mile is be able to complete a full pre-season with our squad in a permanent and full-time capacity, I am very confident that we will see Mile go from strength to strength and further prove his pedigree on a the biggest stage in Australia.
"The signing of Mile continues our team building focus and determination to leave no stone unturned in relation to putting the best possible team we can on the park for the 2007/08 Hyundai A-League season and onwards."
Prior to linking with the Mariners, Jedinak had been one of the cornerstone members of Sydney United’s 2006 NSW Premier League season, where the Edensor Park club claimed the top prize in state football.
Jedinak is in fact the third youngest player ever to debut in the old National Soccer League (NSL) for Sydney United, having made his first appearance against the Northern Spirit at North Sydney Oval at just 16 years and 176 days of age, second only to ex-Sydney United players and Socceroo icons Jason Culina and Tony Popovic.
Jedinak is also the fourth youngest goal scorer in Sydney United’s NSL history, having netted his debut strike against Adelaide City in his second professional season when aged 17 years and 247 days.
After three seasons with the Sydney United first team, Jedinak ventured abroad to join top flight Croatian side NK Varteks Varadin.
Jedinak’s tenure with the northern Croatian outfit saw him contribute to the Krojaèi’s (tailors) fifth place finish in the league and their appearance in the Croatian Cup final against Dinamo Zagreb.
Jedinak also made one substitute appearance for NK Varteks Vara¾din during their 2003/04 UEFA Cup campaign – against Estonian heavyweights FC Levadia Tallinn in the second leg of their first round qualification match up.
At youth international level, Jedinak played a key role alongside fellow Mariner Alex Wilkinson at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates.
Jedinak started the Young Socceroos’ (Under 20’s) Group C matches against the Czech Republic and Canada, and also made an appearance off the bench for Australia’s second round match up against the host nation.
"With everyone that is involved at the club, from the coaching staff to the players and the supporters, we know that we have what it takes to go all the way in season three," said Jedinak.
"I’m very happy to have finally put pen to paper on a permanent deal with the club and I’m really looking forward to putting in a consistent season of regular football that will hopefully be of benefit to the Mariners.
"We should have high hopes for next season, with the team that the coaching staff are trying to build around the players that we have at the club already, I’m confident that we’ll be a force in 2007/08 and I’m delighted to be involved."
