at this stage of the a-league i actually think it is a good idea from the club's perspective to only sign players such as jedi on short-term (ie one year) deals. the league is increasing in quality every year and it would be counter productive to sign a player on a long contract one season, only to find that by the next year that player is merely average (read zdrillic over at sydney). while personally i think jedi is going to be a very good pick up full time (he is probably my favourite player actually) the club is probably merely trying to ensure that it is not carrying players two and three years into the future, especially with such limited squad sizes and salaries.
he can always sign an extension in 6-8 months time when he is proven as a vital cog in our midfield engine.

two-edged sword i agree... glad i'm not making the decisions. i prefer this approach to the sydney fc school of thought however, although as you mentioned our risk would be much lower in tying him up long term (not to mention the fact he will not be taking up nearly as much of the cap as zdrillic is for them)...

It is a testament to the man-management skills of your manager that so many players are willing to take up one year deals. Professionals, no matter how young, hate the uncertainty that surrounds such deals.

Most importantly, he isnt Spencer and may, from time to time, play the ball forwards?? Jedi isn't the midfield passer to blow our minds either to be fair. Hopefully Lawrie will set it up to play to our strengths with Jedi able to lay the ball off short to Gumps, or even Viddie when coming out of the back. I don't really see him as the Grella or Makelele who starts every attack. Jedi will give us value as a midfield destructor, winning headers and getting boots in so that the opposition can't come out of their own half in the first place.

That's pretty much how I see Jedinak playing too. Worthy of a fulltime contract and I too don't like the 1 year deal, but its better than nothing. Hope he also decides to wear the Spencer's old number just to stamp his ownership of that centre midfield role.

1 year deal will be too prove himself. He had one great game for us and a few not so great. I'm very pleased he signed and think he will have a successful season, and therefore a new contract. He has good potential but dont see him as a starting 11 player at this stage. However with injuries he will get plenty of opportunities. He looks a much better option than McMaster would was VERY poor last year.

Otherwise, I think I agree to the point that I can understand.

He proved he is worth an A-league contract with his performances last season, and certainly had more than 1 good game. Jedi gives us something we have never had in the middle of the park, a hardman who ain't scared to throw himself about and get stuck in. I see Jedi starting every game for this reason, plus he's a hard worker, reasonably quick and has a decent shot on him. Lawrie knows his ability and potential, there's no need for him to prove himself, he's been training with them for a whole season already! There are positives and negatives to a 1 year deal, he will have the option to extend if he so wishes I'm sure!

Given Spencers performances for us in V2 and SFC last night, Jedi is a move forward.
Later in his career I reckon he might make a great centre back??

I think he actually played most of his A-league debut at centre back. Remember Spenny came on for O'Grady when he got injured and slotted into the defensive midfielder role, pushing Jedi back to CB.

My faint memory has SP popping into CB briefly, before Viddie slid across there and Browny made his crucial move to LB. Jedi was always in midfield.
