Wilkinson makes FourFourTwo's Team of the Year Monday, 5 March, 2007 - 11:00AM
Central Coast Mariners' defender and recently appointed captain Alex Wilkinson has been named as a member of the Australian FourFourTwo Magazine’s Hyundai A-League Dream Team.
In an all-star side dominated by Hyundai A-League Champions the Melbourne Victory, Wilkinson was recognised as one of the best defenders from season two, taking his place in a back three along with Victory duo Adrian Leijer and Rodrigo Vargas.
The accolade from Australia’s top football magazine is part of its annual Awards, which also includes Player, Team and Manager of the Year, as well as a host of other categories.
Wilkinson was a standout in the Mariners backline this season and his durability and consistency were what caught the eye of the FourFourTwo experts panel when it came to his selection.
"What impressed us the most was that Alex missed only 13 minutes of action for the Mariners this season," said FourFourTwo editor Paul Hansford.
"In a league where many young players suffer from the demands of training and competitive matches, Alex's durability this season has been outstanding. For a 22-year-old to prove so consistent over the long haul of the season, as well as several great performances during the season, made him an obvious choice for a place in our team of the season."
Read about all the winners, as well as scoring a free 36 page 2006/07 Season Review magazine, in the April edition of Australian FourFourTwo, on sale this Wednesday at all good newsagents and now selected Woolworths and Coles Express.
Well done Wilko! Fully deserved!

Always nice to see our players getting recognition. In Wilko's case, it's particularly appropriate. He's matured beyond belief, and taken the responsibility that comes with captaining a team in his stride.
I take it he was the only Mariner, then.....?

Bolton only got the arard because of the run when Sydney went over 5 games without conceding a goal. Bolton was in goal for all of those.

Wasnt danny in goal for our record clean sheets which must have been 1 match less than boltons?
Bolton didnt deserve it. I think Trotty is probably the only keeper in the league who cant feel hard done by.

I thought Tomic was supurb actually Dibo. I thought Bajic was good until he got suspended.
Certainly a big number of GKs better than Bolton in this league.

Certainly a big number of GKs better than Bolton in this league. Whilst Bolton didn't have his best year last year that is far from the truth. There are many elements to goalkeeping, and whilst many GKs in the HAL possess fantastic basic skills (stopping in particular, the high-ball, etc), many fail at the finer arts. In areas such as: *Sweeping off the line *Distribution *Kicking *Short-passing *Footwork under pressure *Command of area Bolton and Vukovic are clear winners at the top of the league. I'd take Bolton any day due to experience but there is no doubt that Vukovic had the better season last year and in time could well be better. You look at guys like Theoklitos, Paston, Tommich, Reddy and co and realise they are great stoppers and can take the odd cross, but in the finer arts they are lacking. Reddy can't take a GK to save his life, Tommich comes out in to no man's land outside the 6yd box and looks lost, Theoklitos off his line is often diabolical and having a sweeper (Vargas) in front of him this season helped him no end. Bolton and Vukovic in particular have great quick distribution. No teams launch attacks from the GK immediately after being attacked themselves like CCM or SFC. You look at the likes of Bajic or Theo after taking a catch and they hold the ball forever as they are scared to lose it. Look at our goal v.s. Melbourne at home this year to see what good quick distribution can do. Some fantastic stoppers in this league - but that's all they are - stoppers.

Spot on analysis. I too have not been overly impressed with the other keepers mentioned above. I would take Bolton after Danny but well in front of the others. Some of them are good stoppers only some of the time. Some of them I would not feed.
