Was talking to Gumpy after the game and I found out the reason he went hard for a FULL 90 minutes.
Four of the Mariners players, including Gumpy and Hutch, had small GPS positioning systems stuck to the small of their back.
This was linked to a computer that would give analysis on kilometres ran, where they ran and the type of runs. It would also show hot spots for players.
Awesome that the Mariners are using this technology and will no doubt benefit the players and tactics.

Ah sweet, they have been using this in AFL for a couple of years... isn't it good having the cash for this sort of stuff ;D

This is a great idea.... I wonder how much they cost?? Would be intriguing to see how regular players compare

Explains Kwassi finding the back of the net in open play. seriously it is good to have this sort of thing. was this just a trial or are they just going to target four players each game? incentive for players to run the yards when they know big brother will be watching them.

Sure beats the pre-Turnbull method of having kids draw the players' paths throughout the game on an etch-n-sketch.

Apparently when Stringers makes his return he'll be fitted with a breathalyser and a catheter.

Pull the GPS info. You can tell how much they’re running, sprinting, walking, the frequency of their efforts etc. Match it in with heart rate monitoring at training (I’m assuming they’re using HRMs at training anyway) and you also get a great measure of the condition players are in. Only running 90% as much as normal, or intensity of efforts are reduced but HR is elevated? The player might be sick, overtrained or nursing an injury that isn’t yet obvious. This gives the hard data to give players and coaches an idea of what is going on in their bodies. You can step the training level up or down to suit them and keep them as fit as possible without overtraining them and dulling the edge.

I've been learning about these things at uni and the use of them in the AFL. We were told that it also helps to see how much running/ sprinting/ walking occurs in each game and therefore training can be tailored to meet the players needs. Eg, some players may need to work on sprinting while others may need to focuses on endurance.
They should be very helpful for the mariners coaching staff.

May also reveal if Sasho IS as lazy as Jaza makes him out to be.

May also reveal if Sasho IS as lazy as Jaza makes him out to be. As long as he keeps hitting the back of the net, I'd rather not know.

Pressuring defenders and poaching balls from them leads to more going into your 'back of the net', not enough strikers in the game today do it enough.

May also reveal if Sasho IS as lazy as Jaza makes him out to be. I was pretty surprised with the way he played in the second half of the 'Nix game. I even saw him win a tackle in his own half when he was moved onto the left flank!

I have been pleasantly surprised with the workrate of both Sasho and Nik.
I was skeptical at the beginning of the season that they were similar players and would not compliment each other but how wrong have I been.

I must admit, it did look good on the weekend when both Nik And Sash were standing on halfway during a NZ corner at our end, and 4 NZ players were left back there to deal with the threat ;D

Sasho is still almost as lazy as he was with us (he's still in the honeymoon period - there's many slowing down of gears to come) and is still giving away an inordinate number of fouls for a forward.
