Seeing as its week 5 and were top ;Dand scoring doesnt seem to be a massive issue and we aint conceded one yet so defensively were up for it, I was curious to get thoughts on what people see the main difference is so faras opposed to last season.
For me I think the middle of the park has been a revelation with Mile and Hutch running the new show and Kwas doing the business out wide.I have respect for Spenny but it just seems were more attack minded than last season, rather than loooking for the defensive safe 40 yard back pass weve got plenty of options with width in attack. Saso seems to fit the bill and Boogs has shown the faith Lawrie showed in him is well justified.
We could talk for hours and seeing as were top we are entitled to ;D

With the modify option - like this! ----------------------------------------------------- Oops & sorry should how do you edit a post
Improved in the mid with Jen the most improved Hut playing better, and Kaws playing outside is better for the team than when he was a striker. Add two capable strikers, and Hem back.
That left side with Hem & Kaw and with both Sah & Nil having left foot as well is very effective.
Also mids have something to aim at that can score, and defenders have to watch our mids as they can score as well, giveing Sah & Nil a little extra space.
Anyone know why Mat Simon was not on team sheet today is he hurt or upset Lawie or what??
I should not say this as it's way to early but Asia is starting to look a possibility so start saving

The big difference IMO is confidence!
We have people all over the park who are capable of doing a job, and the pressure is off Kwassy to be on the score sheet every game!
Boogs' strength and height at the back makes a difference, plus a couple of strikers who know how to find the net!
I was concerned that consistency could be an issue for us this year, but so far I am being proved wrong. There's still a long way to go though!

- a few minor adjustments to the line-up, but only where needed - all positive changes, no disastrous losses
- No major disruptions to coaching staff / management disrupting preparation (compared to other clubs)
- Quality preparation & build-up to the season
- Hitting the ground running with a team who are familiar and confident with each other, and watching the other clubs struggle to overcome their problems with the above 3 points.
That's the difference this season, IMHO.

I agree with Floss but the Mariners have always had the good preparation and the consistency in Management.
I think it is the team adjustments. We essentially have 2 new strikers in Nik and Sasho and Kwasnik is now a very dangerous midfielder. Add to that the strengthening of the back and you have one very solid team with tremendous depth (esp. considering only 23 players and the salary cap)

Just some points noting the diffs between v2 & v3. * Boogs has some sensational form in CB * Vidmar completely recovered from his heart op and the loss of condition that caused. * Mile more settled into the squad, no longer a short termer, but a integral part * Surprise that Hutch is now finding form in a different role as the general in the middle. Was playing without confidence last season and came off the bench without much success. * The return of Heff places an uncertainty into the backline for opposing teams, if he gets the ball he's capable of running the length of the field and crossing very well into the forward line. * Sasho placing pressure upon Nik, Owens pressing Tommy and Andre for a spot. the squad has to perform well to make the starting 11. * Several players having to sit down with the club at season's end and discuss their future. And they've seen that the club is prepared to release established players. * luck riding with us in the preseason as fara as injuries go. Only recently we have copped a few injuries, so there's beena good time for the team to gel. Lawrie will keep a winning team together, so they can build up quite a cohesion in the field. * Maybe the players released, some of them might have been abit negative in their approach to v2, or maybe they had some disagreement with Lawrie and/or the club. That sort of tension usually strikes a club where there are only 20 or so players.

2 strikers and a bit of luck. defintely a bit of luck and the strikers but also: - greater mobility and pace - the rise of boogaard - the ability to defend in large number (midfielders are doing a mountain of work) - the defensive shape and organisation has been immaculate i actually don't think we have been much better in attack from last season except that we have finished quite well kwassy has taken two quality goals that he would have not scored last season, and nik and sash's instincts in the box has got the other four

- Our preparation has been fantastic...we have players such as Ossie and Mile just doing their jobs every week whereas last season every position had a new player, a player returning from injury, an underdone player, a player out of position. - We made some minor tweaks to our squad, trimming some fat and recruiting intelligently and specifically in areas that we needed improvement. Other teams have overhauled and that's made it easy for us to get off to a good start. We've gone from a competitive team to a winning team - Our continuity has helped the strongest part of our game - our defence. We haven't played much champagne football yet, maybe one half against Wellington and patches in other games, but we are so rock solid, with the depth to have players come in and perform, that other teams can't really threaten us - Ursus is right: We now have quality strikers. We've won 3 games 1-0 where there has been few chances for either side but we've taken one. That is the real difference between us and the other teams. We might have done Melbourne 1-0 as well if we'd had Nik and Sash on the field
In this season's A-League, everything is so tight that the quality in the final third to take that extra % of chances is what will shine through. Perm said to me after the game - 'I thought we deserved to win. Did you?" This season it's not about outplaying the opposition on the night - we already deserve to win games such as last night from the preparation and recruitment work we did in the off-season.

Fantastic point Brett, after all a winning team is not all about how you play on the night, its how well your team has prepared for the game, recruitment, coaching, discipline, cognition, fitness and lots of other factors, we have been so exceptional in these areas that performance on the night is not as important as the other teams are crying about, the fact of the matter is that we beat these other teams hands down in off-season preperation and team cognition and i think most of the other teams know this but try to take the focus off it by pointing out mindless details such as crowd size, aesthetic play and particularly the OTHER teams inability to finish

The only difference form V3 and V2 is that we are winning for once not like last season ...shameful...

This season we have quality all over the park and depth in most positions. Injuries killed us last year and we only had one quality striker on a short term contract. *Boogs and Jedi have been massive so far. *Vidmar is fit this season. * Defence is much tighter this year with specialist players in the correct spots and Osman has been superb (apart from Sunday) at RB. *Strikeforce of Sash/Nik/Mori is scary and Simon is there to keep em honest and run his ring off for last 20 of any game he plays in. **we also have the best bench in the A-League with quality like Tommy and Owens waiting for an opportunity
