So Vidmar ISN'T suspended! I assume this has to do with one of the yellow being a second yellow, so in fact the suspension has already been served?

That looks pretty good to me, with likely variants being either Porter or Owens into right back and Wilko into the centre. My recollection is that Melbourne have been raped down the sides a few times of late because of not only the way they're setting up - with essentially 3 holding midfielders - but because the fullbacks in Keenan and Kemp have been pretty much pants, both going forward and defending. And they're getting punished in central defence too, most notably in the air and from set pieces. Maybe it would make more sense to use Owens at right back again because when he comes forward he seems to prefer to cut inside than offer genuine width, and he may run into a lot of traffic. I guess Gumps or Tommy at right mid would be an option then (with Owens in central midfield even), or even throw Tommy left mid and Kwaz right mid, because Kwaz on the right would offer real width and torment Keenan and punch in some service I reckon, and I'm always confident Browny will get foward and deliver some quality balls on the overlap (or from deeper) when he plays left back. So it may offer a bit of balance. |

Owens ain't a right back, we'll get exposed too much IMO if he plays there every week, he's far more dangerous when attacking and not having to worry too much about tracking back as much.
As important as it is to see Wilko in the centre I feel we would be far more stronger at the back if he moved to the right, with Ossie now gone for the season we need good cover there. Smitta and Owens can do a temporary job when called on but it's not their strongest positions.
Fingers crossed next week we'll have a full squad minus Mrdja and Ossie, then Lawrie can field what he believes to be our strongest starting 11! Sasho needs to be careful though, he's 1 card away from a ban, and we'll need him against Adelaide.

I see what you mean DJ but I reckon this weekend our right back needs to be more adept at getting forward than defending. Then again Wilko is probably the best option in the side and we're gifted with centre backs.

Lawrie prefers a 442 but with who we have available it's not really viable! . agree, as discussed previously we have been playing a defacto back 3 with either LB or RB attacking at any given time . with neither boogs, wilko or viddy likely to get forward significantly it puts even more pressure on the other in a back 4 to do a lot . the back 3 will all be clear on their responsibilities and they will not be expected to cover for the defensive shortcomings of others . as the wide men in the midfield will have the pace, it will allow them to provide cover if needed - but more importantly track the runs coming from deep that burnt us last week |
