In a week when Australian football finally looks to be headed in the right direction, we must remember that without Johnny's passion for the game in Australia, none of it would have happened. We owe you one Johnny, football will succeed thanks to you... RIP Johnny, you are to Aussie football what Don Bradman is to Cricket. You will never be forgotten...

Ditto all other comments.
He will indeed be sadly missed, as he added a touch of honest intelligent commentary to the code.
It will be hard to think of football without him, as he was a standard fixture.
And it's especially sad to know that if the A-League works out, he will have missed seeing it's success and a dream come true.

By the way if you the chance read Mr & Mrs Soccer.
A brilliant book by Andy Harper.
It gives you a terrific insight and some personally thoughts on Les' and Johnny's "smoking relationship".

I'm almost tempted, although the thought of giving money to Harper prevents me. I've still never forgiven him for his role in the demise of the Breakers.

A sad loss indeed for Australian football. Whether one agreed or disagreed on his thoughts on the game, his passion was unquestionable.
I had a strange feeling whilst watching Johnny commentate the Solomon Islands (Sydney) game recently. I hadn't seen him for sometime on TV and couldn't believe the difference in his appearance.
As I was unable to watch the game live in Syd that night, I taped the replay for a friend as I watached it on SBS. That tape will never be erased now.
More fortunate was the fact that friends Norman Gruebsch and Dave McGaw actually chatted with Johnny that night. Norman, hailing from the former East Germany was wearing a copy DDR shirt from 1974 and approached Johnny asking if he remembered the shirt that beat the S0CCEROOS 2-0. He was a little wary of him at first, but then opened up and spoke of how impressed they all were of the DDR's training schedule back then. Dave McGaw also spoke with him as well.
From that meeting, Dave and Norm asked Johnny to sign the front of the match programs that they had. After watching the game that night and receiving a signed program the next day, I had a tear in my eye. Somehow I had this feeling that Johnny wasn't going to be around for much longer.
It's only in the last few days too that I have discovered that Johnny aparently wept openly after the Iran game in 97. Having been a spectator at that debacle, I never got to see that for myself. Do any of you have a tape of that game?
R.I.P. Johnny. You'll never walk alone.

I had that tape and my mother erased it accidently.
To this day I still haven't forgiven her for this absent mindedness

Johnny Warren's state funeral will be next Monday, 15th November at 12:00 noon at St Andrews Cathedral, Sydney.
It will also be transmitted on large screens into the adjacent Town Hall and probably into Sydney Square.

Norman, hailing from the former East Germany was wearing a copy DDR shirt from 1974 and approached Johnny asking if he remembered the shirt that beat the S0CCEROOS 2-0. Upon entering this post last night I noticed that 'Footballroos' came up where I typed of 'S0cceroos'. I used capitals and Zero to enter an O so that the [glow=red,2,300]'S' WORD[/glow] (as it may now be known....) could still be viewed. Having spoken to Dave McGaw today about possibly attending the funeral, he mentioned Johnny's wish that S0ccer be called Football.....then the penny dropped as to what and why that happened with the text. Just the same as Un!ted was changed to (and rightly so) Uknighted on the Breakers forum. I noticed today that 'Theworldgame' is has a poll regarding the S0ccer vs Football debate. Do a CTRL -N now and have a vote. ;D DM

I notice your signature at the bottom of the posts. What say we sneak down to Gosford one day and do a little ceremonial grass planting at the stadium!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Kudos to the state government for honouring the Late Johnny Warren this way, a tribute richly deserved for someone that has given his all to the game he loved both on and off the field

An exemplary Australian....
Someone who will be remembered for speaking his mind whether it would make him popular or not, someone who put the games interests ahead of his.....

maybe as a uniting gesture we could organise the planting of all those turfs in one spot at the stadium One very excellent suggestion! We must not lose sight of traditions from past football eras and entities, as that would make us plastic - but we must also be ready to accept much, merge what can be, keep what can't, start creating the new! Coming from both a Breakers Rowdies and also Spirit (old Yr 1/2 Bob, and later variously Bus Stop, Family Hill, and Mac) traditions I can see that there is much to honour and respect from all sides. Those who come from none of those (and we hope there are heaps) must also feel welcome!
