Moore: A-League Must Improve - 442
Queensland captain and Socceroo great Craig Moore has questioned the quality of football on display in the A-League, claiming the playing standard needs to improve dramatically.
While the league is among the most physical in Asia, Moore believes the speed and tempo of the Australian game is lagging behind some of the more established leagues in the world and that it needs to be rectified.
“Was it (the game fast paced)? I don’t know. Maybe people can run fast and those sorts of things, but I still think the thought processes are far too slow,” he said following Queensland’s 2-0 loss to Melbourne.
“It’s one of those things where players get the ball and then think what they are doing with it rather than knowing what they are going to do before they get the ball. I think this is the thing that needs to improve in Australian football.”
The former Rangers captain praised good friend, and opposition captain, Kevin Muscat as the perfect example of a player who displays composure when in possession of the ball, a compliment and description which contrasts starkly with Muscat’s early reputation as a brutal full-back.
“A good player, doesn’t matter how fast the game is always seems to have time on the ball, and those players stand out head and shoulders above everybody else,” he said.
“Kevin Muscat for Melbourne, you can see he has that extra bit of experience where as we were very naive.”
However, Moore, who signed for the Roar following a two-year stint with Newcastle United in the English Premier League, conceded the standard of play has improved considerably since the establishment of the league in late 2005.
“I think it has improved from the beginning of the A-League to where we are at just now, but that’s the part that needs to improve for us to talk about where we are in comparison to the rest of the world,” he said.
Moore’s comments follow cries from a number of media outlets that the current season has been the most boring since the competition’s inception with few goals, many draws and teams being ravaged by international call-ups.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The way I see it, you silly old prick, the LAST thing your team needs is the league stepping up a level and having a better playing standard, with a faster speed and tempo.
Seriously, do you say this kind of shit when your team is in that current form? Wanker.

Why on Earth would he want the quality of the League to improve, whilst his club are in the position that they are? They're not going to benefit with the league improving!

Hmm
I agree with everything he said. I'm glad this season has started a conversation about the quality and pace of the league and the players.
Defences have got tighter and now players lack the speed of touch and thought to break them down, so most goals come from mistakes or counterattacks. That is a worry for the future of the Socceroos. The A-League is supposed to be a breeding ground for our next generation of stars and things must change so we are seeing more Nathan Burns players who can make something special happen, not just pass the ball back or sideways or lump it over the sideline.

Oh, I agree with what he has said, probably should have made that clear earlier, but would you seriously come out and say that if you were in a team playing as shit as his? Dose he think he is better that the league?

. although he sounds like a dick, i also agree with some of what he is saying
. the pace in the player's heads is what needs to step up a notch - maybe its a male thing (difficulty multi-tasking)
. our game yesterday is a case in point, yeah we did well, worked hard and all that but too many times we trapped the ball, looked up thought where we want to go and then ... hang on where did the ball go ... or watching weak passes intercepted in a similar fashion
. i was thinking a similar thing while watching the olyroos play lebanon, if the lebs were up for it probably 90% of the olyroos passes would not have found their man - as it was it looked like a nice passing game, but ....

Dose he think he is better that the league? Like him or not he has had a long career in world class leagues and playing for Australia including in the World Cup. He is therefore more than qualified to comment on how the A-League as a whole shapes up in the scheme of world football. He made his comments from a neutral perspective in reference to a game he had just played in which was a prime example of what is happening in the A-League. Qld and Melb could barely keep the ball in play on Friday it was so out of control. The comments could actually be taken as a criticism of his own team then because Melbourne sat back and Qld couldn't break them down. He isn't excluding Roar from his comments. Don't see anything wrong here.

True Queensland are in crap form but i agree that the A-league quality of football does need to improve but im blaming Lawrie Mckinna in last weeks friday paper they were talking about crowds and he is going on about that crowds would rather see the mariners get positive results over quality of football and in my that is SOOOOOOOOO wrong and also he stated he would rather have the average Aussie grown player that can get the job done then a Brazillian import with flare. Sorry to say but he is a dick and why dont we buy some foreign players coz right now we are like Ku Klax Klan F.C and i am not trying to stir any cultural outrage but if i joined the mariners i would be there darkest player there and im like just a lightly tanned guy so why dont we sign some ethnics besides Andre Gumprect but see he is still Angelo yea anyway lets sign some South Americans or Africans to replace Andre and Tommy as there contracts expire at the end of this season and also they are over 30 so yea they can go and get there senior cards and bugger off. But we could supposedly grow a brazileroo lol or we could be different and sign the first African in the A-league why hasnt anyone signed anyone from there yet since Dwight Yorke has African descent and he was the first person to win the Jonny Warren Medal and Bruce Djite is African-American and he is currently the leading A-league goal scorer so lets sign some Africans and South Americans and lets get the biggest Marquee out of that and Lawrie take my advice.

Yeah, makes my eyes hurt that one.
Look, Radinho, I will try and be respectful to your views, but you have to remember that this is the Mariners Fans Forum, and Lawrie is very well respected here.
Dissing out on Lawrie is not going to get you many friends here. Less so, if you put it in such an uneducated way, and one based upon ethnic, racial presumptions and prejudices.
Lawrie put together a very formidable squad back in 2005, and is building upon that nucleus. He's not afraid of releasing players as we saw last year. Personally that would have been gut wrenching for Lawrie as a man - he knew he was probably finishing one or two playing careers. But the decisions were made and he had his reasons.
He's added Owens and Petrovski this year, and his faith and loyalty to Boogaard has been repaid in full, with young Nigel being in sensational form.
I, along with a few others, were critical of his faith in Boogs when so much time had been spent ill or injured. But now that Boogs is fit and playing well, everyone is hailing Lawrie for this decision. But again, Lawrie made the call and a tough one at that (it would have been easier for Lawrie to cut Boogs and let the lad find his own way back). I am very happy Boogs has had the support of Lawrie and the Mariners in his recovery and I hope to see the lad score a new contract next season worth a couple of seasons at least.
All of this is me trying to say, that while at times Lawrie may make a mistake or two - or so it seems, and folks may make a point of raising those issues, in general, Lawrie is a much better option that what the two clubs either side of us on the F3 have done in the last 3 seasons. They've gone for glamour, glutz and bling, and they've not been able to retain them. If you wanna win one trophy then fine, buy a team, send the club broke, have investigations into possible salary cap breaches and in a couple of years time you will have no current Board members and a huge turnover of the management team.
Or you can patiently get a core squad build upon it's weaknesses, make it a stronger unit, have a little faith in the up and comers, get some Aussie players to stand up and become key players, recruit wisely and not send the Board into a tizzy. Spending $250K on some Brazilian or Ghanian player is not guarantee they will be any better than someone you have watched go around in the State Leagues.

Bruce Djite is African-American and he is currently the leading A-league goal scorer And there I was thinking Bruce Djite was an Aussie and played for the Olyroos. If Eggy can learn to use some punctuation I'm sure you can too.
