Mariners Find Spurs All At Sea Wed 21st Sep 2005
League Two leaders Grimsby Town created the shock of the round by dumping out Tottenham 1-0 in the Carling Cup second-round tie at Blundell Park.
Martin Jol fielded a strong side but the Premiership team were undone by Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala strike a minute from full-time.
When a corner was cleared to the edge of the penalty area, Kamudimba Kalala smashed the ball into the bottom corner to clinch a famous victory.
While Russell Slade's side thoroughly deserved their moment in the spotlight, Jol could hardly be accused of failing to pay the League Two leaders the respect they deserve.
The Spurs boss named a strong line-up containing five England players and 10 internationals in total.
Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane both went close for Spurs but Grimsby striker Michael Reddy was a constant menace as the Mariners made a mockery of the yawning gap between the side's respective league

Maybe Villa chucked their good players on...
But go you mariners how good is that? I'm going to have to start following their progress now as our sister club.

With them being in the same league as Wycombe I can't support them!
Great result for them - but who really cares about that Mickey Mouse cup anyway!

Mariners reward for dumping spurs out the cup is entertaining the toon at home in sunny Grimsby. bring em on !
Liverpool cared about the mickey mouse cup (if is that MM why did spurs play a full strength team against Grimsby?) when Grimsby nocked them out of the competition a couple of years ago. Liverpool echo said Grimsbys last second, 30 yard goal in extra time was one of the greatest ever witnessed at Anfield. fact is the milk cup provides a great opportunity for lower league teams such as Grimsby to play teams of higher standards - and in doing so attract attention to the grass routes of the game. its providing the lower league teams with much needed pennies (especially after the itv digital collapse). if it wasnt for lower league teams - there wouldnt be lower leauges .... and so liverpool wouldnt be as great as they are. every great building needs good solid foundations - just as the premiership needs the lower leauges for its very existence. mickey mouse as it is - it is worth caring about because as i said it generates pennies essential for the survival of many lower leauge teams. its also funny to see the big time charlies (who'll never enter a supermarket ... let alone know the price of milk) getting knocked down a peg or two.
Up the Mariners (Grimsby and CC) !
Up the Mariners !

Being a lower league fan I agree - it's a great competition for raising revenue for the likes of Grimsby! But there isn't a single team in England that would rather win this cup than the FA Cup or promotion! (or in Sunderlands case survival....lol)
