The crew of a jet carrying 289 Gambian football fans pretended it needed to make an emergency landing so they could watch their team in the under-17 world championships, Peruvian officials say.
"It truly was a scam," Associated Press quoted a Peruvian aviation authority spokeswoman as saying. "They tricked the control tower, saying they were low on fuel."
The passengers were allowed to attend the game, which Gambia won, but the aircraft remained in Piura, in Peru's north, while authorities determined what penalty to levy against the airline.
