Being a fellow supporter of a lower league club I agree!
80k a week is about $200k, which means that he earns in 2 months the same as what the 20 players we all love earn in a year with the $1.5 million salary cap!
There is too much money in top level football, a lot of people in England are glory hunters and feel they have to support a premiership team!
AM - most older English stadiums are built around terrace housing!

I was in a lfc nappy at 3 months (close to shit then too!!) and have spent thousands following them (that hurt more!) You only support your mob cause youve been claiming the dole since 1991 ;D ;D ;D Youre right though. Glory hunters everywhere ECFC FOREVER.

This type of conversation is what makes football so appealing to me. The history, the drama, the controversy, the scope.
In 20 years I'll be talking about how back in 2005 football still had some credibility, players generally played in their country in national style leagues. Not the intercontinental 'World Leagues'.
But for now, I love my Mariners. Sure, a salary cap isn't the most traditional aspect of a football league, but look at England, and it's pretty clear that it's needed in this day and age. Keep the teams even financially, and football can get back to it's roots. Play for your local side, play for the badge. Develop youngsters that will become club legends like from the 1900's, not just great players like today.
Guys like Gerrard are so foolish, earning obscene amounts of money but considering leaving their most loved club to get more money, or more personal glory. When their career is long gone and they look back, what is going to be more important? More dollars in the bank, or taking the opportunity to use their gift towards something they can be proud of?

But as I got older I wanted to actually go and watch my team, when your 13 you can't afford to travel to Spurs, get a ticket, have a bite to eat etc so I got on the bus and went to see Wycombe as they were doing well in the old GM Vauxhall conference! Loved it! Now of course, the Mariners are my number 1 team ahead of Wycombe and Spurs, you should always support your local team I say!

i'm a fan of the 'pool too, but nothing on the mariners.
i reckon things like a salary cap, squad limits and even perhaps a player draft would make a lot of sense in our league, and could preserve the clubs. it's not the same as 4 divisions of professional teams etc. vying for promotion/relegation... but it's ours, and it's a good start.
on the glory hunter thing, does ignoring the club i live closest to (bling) in favour of the mariners make me a glory hunter? ;D

The premiership is so damn boring. Just wait til leeds are there next year. We'll give Chelsea a run for their money! Go Leeds!

the hype of the established european leagues is hard to beat, but there is nothing like following your local side that represents you or a side that you feel you have a connection to, so although i enjoy watching/ supporting other teams, if it came down to it Mariners win hands down

i don't understand glory supporters. How, as an adult, can you just pick a team to follow and want them to win week-in, week-out, when you have no link to that club or reason to follow them?
I used to be a Villa "supporter" until i was about 12 and realised it for what it was. I never went to see games. i thought to myself, 'why do i call myself a Villa fan'? That's when i started watching my local team and i seriously think glory supporters are missing out on what it is to be a true football supporter.
In my opinion glory supporters (not perth!) are not true football fans or didnt get enough love as a child! lol. Where would you rather be on a saturday- at the local football club watching your beloved team, or sat in front of teletext getting all emotional over a team on the other side of the country or worlds' result? They have to get their happy-fix somewhere eh?
I especially detest those who laugh when the local team loses whereas "their team" have won 26436 games in a row- none of which, incidentally, they have gone to see!
Many glory supporters, from Grimsby anyhow, bemoan how crap we are, yet they spend their money on other teams merchandise, making already rich clubs even richer- meaning that the certain few teams will always be at the top and teams like Grimsby and Wycombe never will be. Talking about shitting on your own doorstep!

it's OK to have some interest in a club that you have no real connection to as otherwise much of the crap that fills the media would be irrelevant, as long as you get in and support your local team as well - i'd be interested to see how many people 'followed' Chelsea in say 2003 compared to today

I support one team and one team only. I don't really care about any othere teams results, except if it affects Grimsby, or if they are playing our local rivals or if it's a David Vs Goliath F.A Cup match etc. That's only for one game though.
In Arsenals unbeaten season i guess i kind of wanted them to keep on winning because i enjoyed the football they were playing. However- i wasn't bothered when they lost and didn't go out and buy all their merchandise and call myself an Arsenal "supporter".
I enjoy reading about and watching football- i find it all relevant- i just care about one team- my local one.

It looks like they had a serious discussion about morals instead! ;D Yes indeed we did but don't you feel sorry for me trying to get a point across to someone who hates ALL sports and didn't even know Harry Kewell was an Aussie till the other night , I kid you not.
