Ex-Manchester United star George Best is spending his final hours in hospital after doctors said his deteriorating condition was irreversible. Best, 59, could not recover from the internal bleeding that developed last night, Professor Roger Williams said.
Just before 1300 GMT, he said the former Northern Ireland international would not survive another 24 hours. ...(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4465456.stm)
As George Best enters his final hours of life I think we should keep a 'bedside watch' on the forum.
We see a lot of old footage of him on the TV and I become more and more convinced that his style of football was more suited to today than it was in his own time. He didn't have the 'step-overs' and the 'Maradonnas' or whatever they're called, but his pace and attacking style together with his hunger for goals would have fitted well into the current game. Only thing missing was the self-discipline.

I feel sorry for Besty and his family, he was a legend!
But how many warnings did he want to get!

how's this for a quote:
"i' spent a lot of money on booze, women and fast cars, the rest i just squandered"
a shame but alocohol addiction is a terrible affliction - sad for someone so talented to lose it like that

all the papers here have him all over the front page (and back), they've jumped the gun slightly though none said he had actually died

No he is dead - at about 12.20am AEDT the news came through on ESPN soccernet presspass but they may have been jumping the gun too.
He got a hell of alot of warnings, I'm disgusted to think that he got a new liver and still kept up his alcoholism, I feel sorry for his family but part of me really feels that he had it coming.

I had a very upset Bear call me whilst we we on our way home to Auburn this morning. He had just heard the news. I am very upset as well, as I think George was the greatest Man Utd player of all time.
Yes, he just didn't say no. Fame and George did not mix, and he is a terribly sad case of what addiction to booze can do to a person.
I'm sure you will see snippets of George on the TV this weekend. You young people should make an effort to watch a master at work. They will show him scoring 6 in a FA Cup tie against Northampton Town, and nutmegging Johann Cruyff in a World Cup game, amongst other special moments.
Today will be a sombre day in this household. I have a beautiful framed portait of the best Man U players ever at our place, and George is the centrepiece. Black armbands for me on Monday and on the day of his funeral.
Some of my best friends in the club were unsympathetic last night, and unfortunately they are spot on. This wizard of a player just could not handle fame and fortune.
Rest in Peace, George Best. The King is dead, but he's not forgotten. Time to say goodbye.

A sad day for all football fans. I have seen a sizeable amount of footage from George at the height of his Man utd powers. A genius playing in a great team. That he retired at 26 beggars belief and its a shame that the man didnt grace the world cup. On a lighter note, the boy also got to sleep with 3, yes THREE , miss worlds. Strewth!!
Ironically, my lasting memory of Bestie will be when he came out of retirement and played for Fulham. He, alongside the great Rodney Marsh (ex Man City) gave possibly the greatest exhibition of footballing skill i have probably ever seen over 90mins (vs QPR??). It was 2 blokes outplaying 11. If anyone here is ever in the position to view this match via the internet or other means, do so. The skill displayed was completely and utterly off the map. Its better to regret something you did, than something you didnt do.... R.I.P.

I thought he retired at 28 Red? Could be wrong?
He was a fantastic player thou, if he was from a country that did well in World Cups the world would have raved about him!

Definitely my favourite ever Manure player, I don't think I've many I'm just sad that I never seen him play I'm a few years too young, what a legend, during the Pompey v Chelski match the fans thought it more fitting to clap and chant there's only one George Best instead of the minutes silence brought me to tears
