Colombian striker murdered Sportal Colombian striker Elson Becerra and a friend were shot and killed in a club on Sunday while holidaying in Cartagena.
It is believed that 27-year-old Becerra and friend, Alexander Rios, had been involved in an argument with a number of people days before the murder, and the assailants returned, shooting the pair on the dance floor of the Colombian nightclub.
Becerra represented Colombia a number of times and was a part of the team that won the Copa America in 2001. He also played a role in qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The striker came to the attention of the football world when he tried valiantly to help Cameroon player Marc-Vivien Foe after he collapsed on the field during a Confederations Cup match between the two countries in 2003.
It's a dangerous occupation being a football star in Colombia with 12 national players murdered over the past 20 years.
_____________________________ Now he isnt a big name in the colombian side but it is sad to see someone apart off football die, espically while they are still in their career

Columbia is famous for this sort of thing happening. After the 1994 world cup in the USA, a columbian fullback was murdered in a night club because he accidently scored an own goal that put columbia out of the world cup. Andres Escobar (or something like that) was his name. Some drug baron guy did him in. It made world headlines at the time. Funny how in Australia, where football is still widely neglected in the media, these stories always make it through, even though it's been 12 blokes in 20 years. What about Paris to Dakar rally, I beleive as many or people have died in it for example, including an Aussie the other day, (he was perhaps even a Coastie?) but the story lasts a day and the next day they just report about the next stage in the race which proceeds as normal! crazy!

I get what you mean WT, but the Paris Dakar thing was an accident and this was a murder, but the media do like to ride these things. They do the same whenever someone dies in adventure sport (but they didn't give the great Nigel Aylott the coverage he deserved).

The thing that shocked everybody in the case of Andres Escobar is that he was murdered for making a mistake on a football pitch. Something that was beyond comprehesion. Its only game after all.
If anybody gets a chance to see the documentary referred to in the link i posted above, they should see it. SBS showed it serveral months back. Its an amazing piece of work

Nick was at the game last week, I had a chat with him at half time. Maybe if you're a de-listed player they don't let you in.

Tim Vickery it is WT. And indeed I found it a good read, for the life of me, can't figure out why he would want to be there!
