Wayne Rooney is a doubt for the World Cup after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his right foot during Manchester United's game against Chelsea. Rooney has been told he could be out for six weeks, exactly the amount of time until England's first match against Paraguay on 10 June. Rooney was stretchered off late in Man Utd's defeat at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Michael Owen was "not 100% happy" with his foot after returning from injury for Newcastle. Newcastle caretaker boss Glenn Roeder revealed Owen's fears after he returned as a substitute at Birmingham. Nevermind - England always have Peter Crouch to rely on

Owen will play I'm sure, and I reckon if there's a chance he will be ready for the second round (should they qualify) then Rooney will be in the squad. England will be wrapping him in cotton wool for the next 6 weeks like they did with Beckham 4 years ago when he injured himself just before the finals.
Owen can lead the line ok for the group games and with Englands midfield it should be enough to see them through to round 2.
Boy I can't wait for the World Cup, I so hope Australia do well too thou for the good of the A-League, what would be bigger for it? A result against Brazil or qualification from the group?

If we get a result against Brazil we won't lose to both Japan & Croatia so should advance anyway. But on the off chance we did get a result and didn't advance, getting a result against Brazil will be huge.

I can't see us not getting through if we get result against Brazil. Hopefully we can come away with some form of result there to take some pressure off the last game againt Croatia.

Rooney spent yesterday afternoon at the exclusive medical centre at Whalley Range having further tests on the right foot he damaged at Stamford Bridge on Sunday (AEST). Manchester United is yet to release an official bulletin on the results of the new scans but, according to The Sun, rather than one break, they showed a cluster of breaks, which they claim could sideline Rooney for up to three months. If such a gloomy scenario is eventually confirmed, Rooney would not only miss the entire World Cup but also the opening stages of United's pre-season program, including their three-match tour of South Africa. the only positive is that is came from the Sun and they are well known for being full of shit sometimes, yet sometimes they are very good

on fox sports news tonight he was claiming he was hopeful to play and they were saying the usual he will be given every chance routine. i think it's looking doubtful though. he'd only come in in the latter stages when other players would have stolen his spot anyway.
oh and like i told you saturday dj, i reckon a result against brazil would be bigger for aus football than getting out of the group.

England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed he picked Arsenal teenager Theo Walcott for the World Cup despite never having seen him play a match.
The 17-year-old striker was the shock inclusion in the 23-man squad.
"I've seen him perhaps three times in training," said Eriksson. "At Arsenal training on Saturday I saw him play 11 against 11 on a half pitch.
"You can see how good the technique is because space is very small. And I saw him do some finishing."
Arsenal signed Walcott from Southampton in January in a deal worth up to £12.5m but he has yet to make his Gunners debut.
Provisional squad: Robinson (Tottenham), James (Manchester City), Green (Norwich); G Neville (Manchester United), Ferdinand (Manchester United), Terry (Chelsea), Cole (Arsenal), Campbell (Arsenal), Carragher (Liverpool), Bridge (Chelsea), Beckham (Real Madrid), Carrick (Tottenham), Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Jenas (Tottenham), Downing (Middlesbrough), J Cole (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham), Rooney (Manchester United), Owen (Newcastle), Crouch (Liverpool), Walcott (Arsenal).
Standby: Carson (Liverpool), Young (Charlton), Reo-Coker (West Ham), Defoe (Tottenham), Johnson (Crystal Palace).
WTF is he doing taking someone he's never seen play? He's lost the plot, if Walcott scores a couple of important goals then I'll eat my words but Defoe should have been ahead of him!
Very weak forward line with no Rooney or Owen thou!

I don't know if its bold or stupid. Either way, its stupid to only name five strikers, one of whom has a serious injury doubt and one of whom has never played a game of top flight football. I'd have taken Defoe instead of Bridge if I was Eriksson.
Maybe the idea is to introduce Walcott to the England set-up so he's used to it for the future. There's some logic to it, in that successful national teams have played together for years. Getting a few young players into the squad will give them a lot of time to develop their own games and their own style of team play. Don't know that a World Cup is the time to be doing it though

On the beating Brazil vs qualifying from the group question, I'd rather lose to Brazil and still go through than beat them then not go through (unlikely, but definitely not impossible)
The Socceroos have gotten results against big football countries before (including Brazil once or twice, admittedly though not at the World Cup) and it hasn't done heaps for the domestic game. If we make it past the group stages though, the unconverted will hear that not only are the Socceroos at the World Cup, but are one of the better teams there. A lot of Aussies love a winner, and it'll lead more people into the A-League.

Just a little trivia for ya: A woman at my work told me last week that "sources" in Germany are importing 20,000 extra postitutes for the World Cup to keep all the fans happy.

And England are second favourites raoflmao!
I know it was their "B team", but it's still got quality players in there, all of whom are going to Germany!
I think them organising victory celebrations on July 10 is a waste of time coz they have f*** all chance!
