What are your memories of previous world cups?
here is mine (excuse any spelling mistakes i make)
I am only young and the only world cups i can remember are Fance 98 and Korea/Japan 02. From the time when i was 8 years old watching the World Cup i just watched it cause i enjoyed playing soccer. i had no idea what this sport ment to people, i had no idea how big an event it was But watching the Qualifers agianst Iran, i dont have much memory of that game but i still remember how heart breaking it was as Iran scored those two late goals and me not knowing much about the away goal rule. i didnt know any of the players, besides Ronaldo. I still remember Ronaldo playing like shit in the final when i wanted brazil to win, The riots after a Tunisa game (i think they lost to england not too sure), When Beckham got sent off against Argentina, that goal from Owen and when Suker (I think it was) won the Golden boot for Croatia to help them get 3rd. I will still remember that world cup for a long time as it was the first ever world cup i watched.
Then Korea/Japan 02, by then i had an idea how big an event it was. i watched almost every game on SBS and 9 i really enjoyed it. watching that started my passion for football.I watched the Urugauy qualifers and i was absoltly shattered that Australia didnt make it, i didnt want to go to school that day. I didnt have too much of an idea who alot of the players were, i knew most of the Manchester United side and alot of players from the premier league but not that many big names. Watching Sengal beat France in the first game just left me shocked, i was amazied to see how the mighty had fallen, seeing Rivaldo take that dive in the corner got me really pissed off seeing a player like that take a dive. Watching England crash and burn out of the world cup from that goal by Ronaldinho had me talking for weeks. That world cup showed to me how big a sport football is in this world.
Now with this world cup coming up i cant wait, with 5 days left i have been waiting for this for 4 years now. it is even better now that Australia are in it gives me a team to support insted of following another side. with these 5 days before the cup begins, it makes me wonder what will happen, will england crash and burn again, who will be the counrty to come out of nowhere and almost win the cup, Will brazil dominate agian? i know everyone is probally thinking most of those questions plus more but the one question is who will win? i am looking forward in 4 years time to be writeing my memories of this world cup.
sorry for talking on about crap people, i got a bit too bored.

well during my lifetime that I can remember - 1986 - The hand of god (wanker) 1990 - England losing on penaltys in the semi final to the Germans in a game that was so close! Plus Cameron capturing the hearts of millions 1994 - Graham Taylor being a prick and England of course not qualifying. In the actual tournament thou, Hristo Stoichkov having a great tournament and helping Bulgaria knock out the Germans 1998 - Moment of the tournament was Owens great goal against Argentina and Beckhams send off (wanker). Watching the final round my mates house (in England) and drinking shit loads, for some strange reason we dialed a random french phone number and got through to a pay phone in euro disney to congratulate the frogs! 2002 - Ronaldinho being just too good against England! Plus Korea having a blinding run, great to see a smaller footballing nation do well. 2006 - I'll tell you in 5 weeks!

Like Matt I have little memory of 98 because I was a little tacker and it was on after my bed-time. I remember watching a match one night in a Sydney hotel our family was staying in because my dad was there on some business thing. I didn't really know what I was watching.
It's heartening to know that, contrary to back then, every 11 year old today knows that the world cup is on. The promotions, advertising and news coverage have been fantastic in the lead up.
From 2002 my favourite image is the third-place playoff aftermath where Turkey and South Korea players ran hand in hand to each corner of the crowd. I also loved the culture and spirit of the tournament - watching half-hour specials on the various wacky hairstyles on show for example! from the football side of things i'll always remember jared borghetti's goal for mexico, the best header i've ever seen and one of the more unique goals i've ever seen.

1994 - the highly skilled and entertaining Romanian team led by Gheorge Hagi, the emergence of Sweden and the demolition of Cameroon by Russia and Oleg Salenko. Also memorable for taking football to the USA and the first final decided by penalties.
1998 - France winning despite having strikers who hardly scored,. Zidane's performance in the final and Brazil's lack of performance in the same game. England v Argentina game of the tournament with Beckham getting sent off (how funny)
2002 - The emergence of Japan, South Korea and Turkey. England chasing the game and up a man against Brazil and still playing 4 at the back. Senegal the entertainers. Early exits of Argentina and France.

1978 - My first sighting of the great Mario Kempes, the Monumental, confetti all over the ground in the final, how sad I was when Holland lost. 1982 - Paolo Rossi, the best side I'd seen til then (Brazil) getting rissoled by the Froggies, with Socrates missing a penalty. 1986 - The Azteca, a breathtaking place. Maradona, a cheat and a genius, Dieter Honess & Rudi Voeller in combo, and Ursus' favourite, the wave. 1990 - The penalty shootout mentioned earlier (was it 8-7 to the Krauts??) 1994 - America, the Rose Bowl Final (110,000 of them), playing indoors at the Pontiac Silverdome; Stoichkov's brilliance at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Maradona getting busted, Baggio's miss, the Brazillians touching tribute to the recently departed Ayrton Senna (their banner read, in Portugese, "Ayrton, we acclerated with you to a 4th World Title) 1998 - The Stade de France, Zidane's brilliance, Ronaldo's meltdown, Bechkam's ridiculous send-off (should not happen to a Man U boy!!) 2002 - Same time zone, Emre, in fact all of the Turks, South Korea, that extraordinary inside-out header from Borghetti mentioned by the Tiger, the emergence of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo's pubic wig on his head 2006 - The Allianz Arena, Lampard & Gerrard not gelling, Rosicky's artistry, AUSTRALIA, being at CCLC with my mates, the stadium at Kaiserslautern being festooned in gold, GIVE IT TO CAHILL!!!!!!!!!!

1966 - Owning a World Cup Willie football and playing with it that summer at the beach at Skegness (UK). Not really understanding what winning the Cup meant to England. 1970 - Emigrated to Oz in '68 and not yet a passionate Socceroo fan. Don't remember much about our loss to Israel in the qualifiers. The stunning Gordon Banks save in Mexico. The sick feeling of England losing to Germany in the QFs. 1974 - Now a Dinky Di Aussie. Listening to a scratchy poor reception radio broadcast on my Dad's radio (we were too poor to own a TV) as we qualified against South Korea in Hong Kong. The Black and white telecasts of the matches in West Germany. The Dutch losing to West Germany in the Final - sick feeling. 1978 - The even sicker feeling when Holland (I'm half Dutch) lost against the Argies. My first tournament seen on TV and in colour! Wow! The confetti all over the ground in the final was also a big memory. 1982 - Loosing the qualifier to NZ in Sydney - oh, the embarrasment and ineptitude. Only one match stood out in the Finals - the wonderful one between Italy and Brazil. I must have watched it a dozen times. 1986 - How we nearly knocked off Scotland in Melbourne to qualify. Maradona - Hand of God and his other glorious goal. 1990 - Drawing with Israel in both the qualifiers, but missing the chance to play the final decider. Arok doing his nut when the Italian ref called the end play too early. I only remember Italy '90 as a mean and spiteful series. 1994 - Loosing to Argentina in the final qualifier with that sickening away own goal. Attending the Final in a stifling hot Rose Bowl ($800 a ticket bought at the YHA). The Pasadena party after the match. 1998 - Iran at MCG - say no more - grown men do cry - copiously. The final with the flamboyant French teaching the mighty Brazil how to play. 2002 - Uruguay - great first leg Qualifier in MCG. Sickening capitulation in Sth America. Tears from Vidmar. Japan and South Korea's success in the Finals, the first sight of Huus. Ronaldo's comeback in the final. 2006 - Being at Telstra stadium on Nov 16 to stitch up the Uruguayans with my CCM mates. The National anthems. The goal. The penalties. Watching Kevrenor blubbering like a baby at final whistle. Ditto me. Kaiserslautern - Fritz-Walter-Stadion - nuff said.
