Rooney, Scholes sent off in Man U win Saturday Aug 5 17:53 AEST Manchester United convincingly beat Porto 3-1 in the opening game of the Amsterdam pre-season tournament on Friday, although they ended the match with nine men after Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes were sent off.
Rooney was shown a straight red card four minutes before the break after he caught Pepe in the face with his forearm while jumping for a high ball.
Scholes followed midway through the second half after a clumsy tackle.
"It was a ridiculous decision," United manager Alex Ferguson said of Rooney's sending off when talking to Sky Sports.
Rooney was also sent off during England's World Cup quarter-final defeat by Portugal in June for stamping on Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho.
Scholes had opened the scoring for United after 10 minutes when new signing Michael Carrick picked him out from a corner and he shot into the net from just outside the penalty.
Rooney then doubled the lead eight minutes later with a fine chip over Porto's goalkeeper Helton.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who played only three league matches in the last three seasons because of injuries, added a third goal after 74 minutes.
Central defender Pepe scored Porto's consolation goal four minutes later with a fierce shot form 20 metres.
Hosts Ajax drew 1-1 with Inter Milan, midfielder Wesley Sneijder equalising for the Dutch club four minutes from time. -------------- Did anyone see the match this morning against Fc Porto!?
The Red Devils are looking in fine form and im sure the Carrick deal will please united supporters! Ole is back! and looking great. Bring on the EPL!!!!

That send off of rooney was bullshit, i can not see how the ref thought that was a red card, allright he did have his hand there but there was no way he did it to hurt the player, i see that as a yellow card at the worst.
But that aside Manchester really played well after Scholes scored that first goal and they dominated after that. Ronneys 2nd goal was all class he made it look easy. I am going to get up early tomorrow and watch them play Inter.
I think Man U will go good this year after signing carrick and possibly senna they will make their midfield much stronger and thats where we have been lacking in the past few years. All they need is one big name striker to replace Ruud, but even if they dont get a world class striker Saha was going good last year and Ole Gunn is getting back to the form he was a couple of years ago, GO United

i disagree - both were reds
rooney came across with a deliberate attempt to elbow the player, but try to make it look like it was a natural jump
happens all the time
the referees have been asked by fifa to crack down on this thing during the season
the players know it and dumb-arse rooney should have known better

Greetings from fortress Broadway,
I have quietly, from a distance, witnessed the sledging of my beloved Manchester United from all and sundry, in particular from a few supporters of London-based EPL clubs.
Fine. Say what you want, I am not going to bite at your contemptuous and supercilious bile.
The purchase of Michael Carrick, Louis Saha finally unshackled, a fully fit Ole Gunnar and Wayne Rooney yet to come into his prime has me excited for this season. Will we beat Chelsea? Probably 6 or 7 to 1 against to do that, but you just never know on your day.
This may be the year that the Blues take massive strides towards that gorgeous European Cup, so they could be distracted. Jose and his boys may get bored playing against some second-tier sides. I emphasise MAY, as Ballack and Shvechenko will want to prove themselves. So I remain very hopeful of a very good EPL season, and I would quite honestly sacrifice Europe to once again get our hands on the EPL trophy, something our record proves we have a SERIOUS claim to ownership of.
I'm not getting into sledging other clubs. I think the top 5 will be, in no order:
Manchester United Chelsea Liverpool (watch out; Anfield will be a scary place to visit this year) Tottenham Hotspur Bolton Wanderers or our comrades from Upton Park
I am perfectly happy for people to abuse about my lads, and our magnificent Old Trafford. Let's have this discussion at Christmas and again in May, and we'll see how everyone fared. I am NOT frightened by any of your teams, and may all the glory belong to Manchester United.
Cheerio,
Auburn Mariner

I think Solsjkaer will be Man Utd's best player this season. As much as I dislike them i respect them much more than Chelsea and I think the more teams challenging for the title the better. If Chelsea win again it just sends the message that you can buy the league.

Auburn also think Man U are also expected to Sign Senna from Villireal and the transfer fee was agreed on today so man U will be looking good.
I am hopeing we can knock off chelsea as i think chelseas main goal this year will be the Champions league win but i do still expect chelsea to win. a FA Cup win could be good for us as well, i would love to see players like Rooney start winning more throphies as they deserve to be winning cups

My dislike only extends to when we play them. The rest of the time I dont really give them a lot of thought really. I actually had a sneaky respect for young Shrek when he tried to break Terry's leg in the last game of the season.
Late, over the top and on a filth player - cant beat it.

turns out rooney and scholes will be there for EPL kickoff
i have to say watch out for henry's gunners i have a feeling they will have a better season without campbell and probs cashley cole because the youngsters from last year will be more gelled and rosicky with fabregas in the middle will be engineering greatness for henry and van persie to feed off.
All i want is manu, spurs and chelsea to not come first

All i want is manu, spurs and chelsea to not come first well, there's not much left after that, except maybe liverpool, but they aren't playing the best at the moment. i think it will be another chelsea year this year. they can pretty much buy out the league. and besides, i dont care if they win the prem. i will just be laughing so hard if they dont win the champions league again this year, which is all roman abramovich wants anyway.
