Real Madrid have won Primera Liga title after 3-1 victory against Real Mallorca on the final day of the season - pipping Barcelona due to a better head-to-head record.
Two-time defending champions Barcelona hammered bottom side Gimnastic Tarragona 5-1 to seal second place ahead of Sevilla, who lost 1-0 against Villarreal.
The equation for Madrid was very simple going in to the final day; win and the title was theirs for the first time since 2003.
Any slip-up and a Barca win at Gimnastic would have seen the trophy head to the Nou Camp for the third year in a row.
And for much of the evening it looked as though Madrid were going to blow it.
Mallorca went ahead at the Bernabeu through Fernando Varela in the 17th minute and the hosts' problems intensified when leading scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy limped off with a hamstring problem.
The match changed with the substitution of David Beckham, on his final appearance for the club before he joins the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Beckham's replacement Jose Antonio Reyes equalised after 68 minutes and then Madrid went ahead when Mahamadou Diarra's header was saved by Mallorca keeper Miguel Moya only for the ball to strike Angelos Basinas, guarding the post, and go in.
Reyes sealed it with a wonderful goal with seven minutes to go.
The Primera Liga climaxed with Real Madrid claiming their 30th championship but the title seemed to be one that no-one wanted to win for most of the season.
Barcelona, Sevilla and Valencia were all in with a shout at one point before Madrid managed to clinch it in a thrilling finale to the campaign.
Coach Fabio Capello was close to losing his job earlier in the season with his use of defensive tactics quickly criticised by Madrid supporters.
Capello also had well-publicised spats with David Beckham and Antonio Cassano as well as seeing his relationship with president Ramon Calderon turn sour.
