I'm not a fan of the commonwealth games as most of the sports involved just bore me. Though i suppose getting big tournament experience is what we need if Aus is ever going to host the World Cup

Commonwealth games are crap, I'll keep up to date with track and field plus swimming just so I know who won but I won't be watching it unless there is crap else on!

comm games gets a bit boring... it really is just a confidence booster for australian sport I'm sure most of the athletes would disagree. I don't usually go for opening ceremonies. But this one was ok. Quite artistic really...especially the flying tram bit followed by the projected street map of Melbourne...in contrast to the projection of the Aboriginal art later. A good representation of the opposition between the cultures: our preoccupation with getting everywhere in a hurry versus the Aboriginal attitude of living life at a slower pace with longer term aims. Queenie seemed to enjoy it but Phil the Greek's piles seemed to be giving him discomfort. Being a child of the Empire, I was a bit put out not to hear God Save the Queen, but I thought Advance Australia Fair was perfectly executed by the massed chorus, rather than being strangled by a lone pop singer. Fireworks were spectacular especially the Catherine Wheels attached to the backs of the skaters! Hope there were no accidents! No doubt the poor nations which couldn't even afford to outfit their athletes would have appreciated the obscene amounts of money spent on the night.

the only thing good about the olympics is that it brings the world together as an event and is interesting culturally...the sport is rubbish. the comm games are far worse than the olympics in both a humanity and sporting sense. what a waste of space. out of protest i refuse to watch any event except women's hockey

with the olympics there's stuff i love watching - the 100m is cool i can watch the cycling til everyone else in the room has either fallen asleep, left the room or else is gnawing their own leg off out of sheer boredom. the football shows young stars coming up
but mostly it's about the sports that you never get to see otherwise - weighlifting - what's that - another enormous bastard throwing a bar in the air! good for him! gymnastics (who else cheers for injuries?) rowing and kayaking (oh god how that's boring!) equestrian [snooty voice]Oh dear, look at that, Veronica seems to have just slipped as her mount Son of Raj baulked. How dreadfully disappointing![/snooty voice]
so in that sense i agree with you entirely brett!

so in that sense i agree with you entirely brett! even the sports you mentioned are boring to me, but become watchable because of the stories that come up with the athletes. PB's and splits that mean nothing to anyone outside the sport put me to sleep but you always get the guy who has never swum in a full sized pool or is coming back from some injury or disease or the son of the prior champion or the apprentice overcoming the master...that's what makes the olympics worthwhile. if you want 'us and them' pure sporting contests, watch the world cup.

How crazy was the Women's Marathon finish! Great stuff, but I feel so shattered for Scotty Wescott came 4th but really wasn't close enough to kick at the end, he's a great guy and he'll just continue to improve, look out for Emma Murry, I don't know if she's keen to downgrade to the Marathon but if she does she'll rip it up, recently came 4th in the Australian Trail Ultra-Marathon Championships at the 6 foot track.
COME ON CRAIG!!!
