just watched a video by "the cure" and i think we can put their emo'ism down to it being the 80's. ive seen a few of their videos now and, ok, theyre are a bit emo, but hes doing it on behalf of the fact its the 80's. i saw the play recently, hes put on a lot of weight, he still has the black hair, but he aint an emo.

There are some good EMO slash punk bands around they just dont get played on the radio so knowone knows about them. Well JJJ might play them. Panic at the Disco (not your traditional emo), Fall Out Boy, Story Of the Year, Funeral For A Friend are all good emo bands.

the cure are emo? FFS!
isn't that a bit like calling early the who indie rock?
applying what's essentially a new-ish marketing term used to fence off a niche in the market to describe a band that defined the genre more than 20 years ago seems a little odd.

if you said punk/new romantics, you'd be on the money. my point was that it's reverse categorising them - giving them a label that was defined well after they did most of their work, giving the same status as a bunch of clones that followed them rather than recognising where they led.

like, everyone else and the beatles. or everyone to the old blues musicians like robert johnson, skip james or muddy watters not really - nobody's saying that the beatles are a little bit like jet. you can't retrospectively categorise someone in a group that only came into existence 20 years after they were doing their thing. you could say the genre takes influences from them, but not the reverse.

I always categorised The Cure with bands like The Smiths and Joy Division as 'miserable 80s English music'. Good music though - good music doesn't have to be happy
