Fact is that he is probably the biggest role model in Newcastle and is representing his city and sport, and now a self-confessed drug user and cheat. And from what I have witnessed and from stories I have heard this is only the tip of the iceberg in regards to his indiscretions. Add Harrogan to that list as well. It is not tall poppy syndrome. He is involved in criminal activity and influencing impressionable other people with his behaviour and for this I loathe and despise him and it would not matter in what walk of life he comes from. Only just had a read of this thread, but agree with Mick here about 'the role model" issue. Some on here have said & you hear it in society all the time that; "these blokes are just athlete's, they don't ask to be role model's", but in regards to this oth Harragon & John's DO ask to be a role model's. Joey "sell's" his image to the highest bidder for TV commercial's advertising all sort's of shit, one to mind is a massive housing estate between here and Newy, even uses the line "I love the development so much I bought a house here, why don't you?" Don't know what Chief harragon's discretions are that MM alludes to, but he 's just as bad when it comes to selling his 'clean image' to the highest bidder, a major Health Insurance company is just one with the TV ad showing hundreds of people 'following' him down the street after 'hearing' him 'talk-up' the benefit's of the Health Insurance company. That's right people following him.......why don't you? Don't want a be a role model to the kiddie's and general public? Then stop promoting yourself as something 'above' that of just an athlete.

Why don't we just throw mud at everyone & maybe if your lucky some will stick. Johns made a goose of himself, but that's not enough so lets start on one of his mates so we can keep putting the boot into league? Where the hell is this Harrigan thing coming from & when did you hear him mention anything about not wanting to be a role model? Bloody hell............what's wrong with some of you guys? Get picked on at school by a league player? A league player once say you played a poofters game? Some of you bitch on like bloody whinging little girls with a chip on your shoulder.
I'd better be carefull before you start on me, because I also played league, & I get bloody sick of being streotyped as a dumb arse, meat head, boozed up drug fiend by holier than thou, one eyed football fans wearing sparkling halos.
How about you throw some shit my way & see if It sticks.

Happily :-)
Johns pimped himself to advertisers as Mr Newcastle for $$$. His drug taking was covered up by his employers, his family and his mates (and the media if PH counts as both?)
If someone is so stupid as to take narcotics thats their misfortune - to make money out of people by branding yourself as a clean living "sports" icon while a junkie is where it gets a bit tricky.
If you look at how football handles junkies, Adrian Mutu was found to be on Coke while at Chelsea. No whining, excuses or spin. They just tore up his contract as soon as they had proof. Rugby League would not have its reputation for abuse of women, drug taking etc etc if it wasnt tolerated at the highest levels.
And I didnt receive any stick from Leaguies at school . I went to school in London and no one had ever heard of it.

I went to school in London and no one had ever heard of it. WTF has that to do with Paul Harrigan, which was my original question btw? All Australians, on a peronal level, can only hope to one day reach the high moral values of mother England & our sportsmen/sports admin strive to acheive the superior ethical standards of English football. While never forgetting we are a colony & it will take time to alter our convict instincts, we have a wonderfull example to follow in our endeavour to achieve. Gee wiz...I'm getting very embarressed being here as an ex League player & Aussie born boofhead with Welsh ancestry, obviously without the moral & ethical capacity to be in the company of ex football players. I should have known better & shame on my ignorance. I'll just toddle off & try to learn my station in life is a step or two below my illusions, however, seeing as I have learned the value of politeness, obviously from football fans, I'll leave you with a little bit of reading to browse over with the next round of tea & scones. Psssttttttt..don't beleive a word of what it says about drug use & cover ups in English football, as I suspect it's a conspiracy by Rugby players masquerading as jounalists. Can't be too carefull with those boofheads eh? Copy & paste the first two as i cannot get them to display as a full url. observer.guardian.co.uk/sport/issues/story/0,,676764,00.html football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,1605734,00.html www.cnn.com/2003/SPORT/football/10/25/england.drugs.reut/www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/05/18/1053196481744.htmlnews.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/3170586.stmwww.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article1167234.ecewww.le.ac.uk/press/press/drugsuse.html

Paul Harrogan has had a few, shall we say, rumoured misdemeanours covered up in his time, ala Joey Johns, if you believe everything you hear. That is why he is coming into the conversation.

No mate, just have little patience with those that critically stereotype groups of people be it league, football or tiddlywinks. In particular those that have no experience or knowledge of league or those involved other than their own prejudice & what they hear or read. There are dicks in all sports & every walk of life but most people are decent. Touchy concerning league because I played it myself & had a family member who was a Kangaroo & another an ARL player. My son was the first in six generations to play football. From my perspective, the opinions of league by many in football, are as stupid as the stereotyping of football in the past as the sport for wogs & poofters. Both attitudes are ignorant.
Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain - and most fools do. (Dale Carnegie )

Now he can join Chief's "HCF" and claim his medicals. ;D Harrigon doesn't promote HCF. He does however, promote another health fund (name escapes me for the moment). I'm with HCF and have been for years, and would shudder if they used Harrigon as a spruiker. I do not like Harrigon's public image - simple as that -no hidden secrets that I may have been privy to or anything like that. Just don't like his boofhead attitude on air.

It's NIB - a Newy company, but I think it may have changed its name. I know what you are saying Pete. My super company Hostplus are a major sponsor of the Storm. I have said to my wife that i wish I had about eight million in my super fund. Then I could threaten to pull my money out if they kept sponsoring the Storm. Though I am stoked that they are one of the best performing super funds and my returns have been outstanding. Therefore my money is staying where it is.

There's hardly ANYONE who is an angel in this world, Bakery! We've all done things we wouldn't like others to know about, it's human nature. You could go through a list of all public figures, one by one, and I bet they've done things or been associated with this or that, supported this or that etc. that would have purists saying that's not on. I've met enough public figures to know they are just human like everyone else. I am sure if I had the fame and money some of these folks have, or supposed to have, I'd be as big a ratbag as some of them are supposed to be too. Even without being famous or being in the public eye there are some things I won't talk about - and folks who know me, would know that is pretty hard to believe (I'm a jabber jaws ;D). So, if his drug problems and depression were Joey Johns' dirty little secret, then I can imagine how damaging that would be to him personally, notwithstanding the public image he has and the comments he's had directed about him while he was a player and role model.
