oh well, while i'm here:
NO to cheerleaders because a) makes a mockery of the sport and the fans b) destroys the 'football' atmosphere c) it's not american football d) completely un-necessary
and NO to marching bands because a) always sound annoyingly out-of tune due to the doppler effect when they march around whilst playing b) drown out the fans c) see a-d above
Seriously, there is no serious talk of either of these things happening, is there?

Depends on the alternative.
I'll go for the cheerleaders ahead of people filling up tomoato sauce bottles.

Valid point... definitely in need of some form of improvement. But if it were babbylons we'd all need to carry binoculars. then i couldn't hold 2 beers at half time

We as the fans have to try and keep this plastic league as "real" as possible And cheerleaders go totally against this

Forget the cheerleaders, but I love a good brass band! Has to be better than that awful kicking comp. You could just see them marching on as the teams make their way off, playing old favourites like Old Comrades and Sussex by the Sea! You could almost imagine yourself at Wembley Stadium! May not appeal to anyone under 40 though....
Is Michael Buble free....?
Edit...not forgetting Waltzing Matilda

Are marching bands any more annoying than bagpipes?

Half time should be everyone throwing a complimentary pretzel at a parading Mr Burns.

Are marching bands any more annoying than bagpipes? Bloody sassenach. Learn to appreciate the sound of the pipes in the gloaming.

Newcastle a few years ago used to have a relay sprinting race between the local football clubs with $2000 prize money to the winning club.
This went on for a series of home games and culminated in semi finals and finals.
Anything to get the local clubs involved in a competition and prize money is great.
It adds plenty of interest because a good chunk of the crowd is connected with the entertainment due to their involvement with their club.
It provides both competition and an emotional attachment to the entertainment making the whole thing more meaningful.
Sheesh, I should work in events.

Cheerleading should be left to the Dallas Cowgirls. Oh my God, talk about Platinum!!! Cheerleaders are a waste of time and effort. Leave the cheerleading to the Septic Tanks. I have mixed feelings on this. I'm not a great fan of cheerleader concept generally, but if it attracts people to games (including the cheerleaders themselves) they provide harmless fun, and bums on seats. In addition, the stories I could tell of vocal supporters and cheerleaders on the road to away games in the old KB United years!!! One of them I fell in love with and married! Still happily so. And what are the Marinators, if not a cheer squad of sorts?! Are we being a tad hypocritical?

neither seems right, you might as well have sound effects during the game like they do at basketball if it goes down that route.
a sprint race, mini-game with juniors or perhaps picking 1 mariner and 1 away supporter to have shots at goal for prizes, anything would be better

On the news tonight it had a story about South Sydney sacking their cheerleaders and replacing them with drummers.

How about a half-time exhibition match between Bluetongue Lager and Bluetongue Draught?

Do the NRL cheerleaders really bring anything to the match? Do they really attract extra people to the game?
I wouldn't think so. A band? Americans are the only ones who do the whole 'marching band' thing well - but let's face it, they also do the cheerleader thing a lot better than we do. Our cheerleaders are pretty half-arsed in comparison.
Better halftime entertainment is a must - I'm sick of seeing the same boring kicking competition over and over again. Something like what Marinermick suggested would be good - or if nothing else, just VARY IT!!! Rugby league/union usually just has 2 young kids matches happening, but occasionally they have different things happening - I remember seeing a game being played with a MASSIVE ball, as well as a few different types of races/contests between various team's supporters. The best we seem to be able to manage is a sauce pouring competition. Wtf?? I'm not saying invest too much money in it - people don't go to matches for the halftime entertainment- but it needs to be improved.
