I'd go with the second variation, with the black shading.

Wow and mini heff(Farthinater) joins the race nice one mate i think maybe the writing to the top and bottom rather then over picture, and perhaps official mariners logo to the left and marinators logo to the right also not overlapping the crowd could somebody clever plz whip up an exsample for me.
p.s Where are u guys getting these crowd shots from?

I meant for text to be right above the picture pretty much a completely un obscured view of crowd with text on top and underneath logos right and left.

The problem with that eggy is what do you do with the background colour under the text, it would need to blend in to the picture so as not to break up the banner. Not to detract from whoever did the original banner (I never made one so really can't complain) the white under the mariners logo always annoyed me.
If we had a photo where the majority of supporters is in yellow and you can match the yellow for the outside then yours would work IMO. most pictures I've seen the crowd doesn't create the yellow sea that would be needed to pull you idea off.
